“Could I do more?”
You all have done more for this game and our studio than could ever be imagined, and no words can accurately depict how lucky we are to have shared these worlds with you.
Don’t blame yourselves or think you could have / should have done more. This is just the way it goes sometimes.
No matter the future, we will always have these memories.
Thank you. For everything.
In 2022, Hideki Matsuyama was strongly rumoured to have turned down a significant 9 figure offer to join LIV Golf.
There was a premise at the time that there would be significant punishments from the PGA Tour if players were to leave. This had a big impact on many player’s decisions. But, fast forward less than 4 years, and Brooks Koepka has been reinstated as a member almost immediately and appears to be receiving a hero’s welcome.
Speaking to Golf Digest Japan ahead of the Farmers Insurance Open, Hideki spoke about the subject:
“I was shocked to hear about it in the news.
“I thought, ‘He can come back...?’ He achieved results on LIV, so that's probably why they took that measure.”
He went on to say he has no issue with Brooks, but is frustrated with how the tour has handled it:
“I have nothing against the player himself. I actually think Brooks is pretty impressive for having the courage to make that decision [to terminate his LIV contract]. But I do question why the PGA Tour didn't explain things to the players beforehand. At the very least, I wasn't aware such a rule existed.
“While there's a financial hit, what about the non-monetary aspects? What happened to the idea that players who joined LIV couldn't compete on the PGA Tour for a year... That's what I'm more concerned about.
“We're the ones playing. The PGA Tour makes the decisions. It doesn't matter what we say.”
Hideki isn’t the only player who has expressed these views. Wyndham Clark also shared similar thoughts when expressing his opinion on the subject a couple of weeks ago.
Given the enormous amounts of money that were involved, it’s easy to understand why players would feel this way and I wouldn’t be surprised if more of them decide to speak out as Brooks’ comeback progresses.
