Shots rang out on a quiet street while a family sat outside on their porch, caught clean on their Nest camera.

Mom, dad, their son, and the neighbor’s kid were all right there together when gunfire broke out nearby.

When the gunfire started, the neighbor’s kid took off running across the street to get to his own house instead of getting pulled inside the closest one. In that split second, distance is everything, and open ground is the last place any kid should be while shots are still going off.

Nobody plans for this, and panic makes people freeze or default to what feels familiar, but the closest safe door should always win over the “right” one?
