BGE has proposed a roughly $9 monthly surcharge on Baltimore City electric bills to cover an 84% increase in the city's underground conduit fees, shifting costs that would otherwise spread across the utility's entire central Maryland service area onto city customers alone.
Mayor Brandon Scott and Council President Zeke Cohen immediately denounced the proposal as an "illegal and unprecedented request," accusing BGE of avoiding its financial responsibilities. The Maryland Public Service Commission must approve the surcharge before it can take effect on or after January 1, 2027.
