You are probably familiar with the term bongo in the context of the well-known drums, but did you know it is also the name of a threatened antelope?🦌@TommySandri introduces us to the mountain bongo and the efforts to conserve this striking subspecies.

Great to see this important and impactful work coming out on the Mountain Bongo @ Tommi Sandri #wildlife#conservation#Kenya@KWSKenya and the Bongo Surveillance Project!
Out now! Sandri et al. used camera-trap records and a newly developed identification system to monitor the Critically Endangered mountain bongo in Kenya. They provide the 1st estimates of the species' population size in the wild, a mere 29-50 individuals🚨 https://t.co/1wVAsvPbsz
Congratulations to one of our scholars @TommySandri who passed his PHD viva yesterday! 🎉
Tommy's studies focus on understanding the genetics and ecology of the #criticallyendangered mountain bongo.

@xaalii @NikiRust basic research may not seem “useful” from the start e.g. the system developed to detect stars and other objects in astronomic images was then used to help detect tumors in clinical images. 99.9% sure astronomers did not have cancer in mind.
We are so pleased to be welcoming you back to #TheZoo this week!
