Around 2010, Mel Gibson was developing an ambitious Viking epic tentatively titled Berserker, with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star, following the success of Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto.
The script, written by William Monahan, promised a visceral, historically grounded story about Viking warriors. Gibson was determined to make it as authentic as possible, with dialogue in Old Norse and period English, realistic depictions of pillaging and battles, and an unflinching focus on the raw brutality of the Viking Age.
Unfortunately, the project ultimately fell apart due to a mix of Gibson’s personal controversies, which made studios nervous, scheduling conflicts, and DiCaprio reportedly stepping away.
That said, Gibson has occasionally hinted over the years that the project is still alive. Perhaps it’s time to dust it off and see if DiCaprio might be willing to revisit the idea. A Mel Gibson-directed Viking epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio and shot for IMAX would for sure have millions lining up at the box office.
Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio will star in ‘HEAT 2’.
