Another Graduate Trainee Issue❗️❗️❗️
How to Ace the Panel Interview & Group Discussion in a Graduate Trainee Program.
If you are preparing for a Graduate Trainee interview, I want you to read this carefully.
The panel interview and the group discussion are not just recruitment steps, they are controlled behavioral and cognitive assessments. Companies use them to read your mindset, your thinking process, your emotional stability, and your potential to grow.
Let me break this down for you in a way that’s both practical and immediately usable.
✅The Panel Interview: Your Thinking, Your Behavior, and Your Psychology Under Pressure
A panel interview is designed to test more than your answers.
They are watching:
🤌🏽How you process information
🤌🏽Whether you panic under pressure
🤌🏽How structured your thoughts are
🤌🏽Whether you’re emotionally intelligent
🤌🏽How well you fit the company’s culture
Once you understand the psychology, performing well becomes easier.
A. First, Understand What the Panel Is Really Assessing
Every panel is silently asking three core questions:
1. “Can we train this person?”: They are testing for learning agility.
2. “Can this person remain stable and logical under pressure?”: They want cognitive composure.
3. “Will this person work well in a team?”: They want emotional maturity.
If your answers sound polished but your behavior shows fear, defensiveness, or confusion, they will notice.
✅Use the STAR-L Technique
STAR-L = Situation, Task, Action, Result, Learning. The "Learning" part is the game-changer, it shows growth mindset and adaptability.
❌wrong answer
“I handled a difficult customer, and it ended well.”. This tells them absolutely nothing.
✅ Strategic answer
“In my previous role as a student volunteer, I handled a customer who was upset about a delayed response (Situation). My responsibility was to de-escalate the situation (Task). I acknowledged their frustration, provided the correct updates, and offered an alternative solution (Action). The customer calmed down and left satisfied (Result). The key thing I learned was the importance of staying calm and communicating clearly even when the other person is emotional (Learning).”
That’s structure.
That’s emotional intelligence.
That’s what panels score highly.
✅Manage Your Cognitive Presence
Panels intentionally create pressure, multiple faces, different personalities, back-to-back questions. They’re observing your mental steadiness.
❌ Don’t do this:
🤌🏽Talking too fast because you’re nervous
🤌🏽Jumping into answers without thinking
🤌🏽Over-explaining because you want to impress
✅ Do this instead:
👌 Pause 1-2 seconds before answering
👌 Speak in structured points
👌 Maintain steady but relaxed eye contact
Example:
Panel asks:
“Tell us why you want to join this company.”
❌ Wrong:
“I really need a job and I’ve always admired you guys. I think I can grow here.”
This is vague and desperate.
✅ Strategic:
“I’m particularly drawn to this company because of its structured learning framework and its reputation for developing young talent. I see it as an environment where I can build strong foundational competencies while also contributing fresh ideas and energy to the team.”
This shows clarity, research, and intention.
In 2026, you will receive an email starting with:
“Congratulations, you have been selected for a fully funded PhD position for XYZ program.”

OPEN LETTER TO ADEKUNLE GOLD
Dear Adekunle Gold,
@adekunleGOLD
I hope you are well and thriving.
My name is Dr. Toluwani Binutu, and I am the founder of the Do Better Foundation, an initiative dedicated to uplifting underserved communities through education, healthcare, and empowerment.
This December, we are kicking off a mission to feed 5,000 children across 8 underserved communities in Lagos State. For many of these children, getting a single nutritious meal a day is uncertain, and the festive season can pass without joy or celebration. We want to change that by giving them food, hope, and the assurance that they matter.
Your journey has been a story of resilience, truth, and connection to everyday Nigerians. Through your music and advocacy, you inspire millions to believe that a better life is possible. That same belief is what fuels our work.
I am reaching out to humbly ask for your support through funding or partnership to help make this initiative possible. Any contribution, whether financial, collaborative, or through your voice and platform, will bring us closer to ensuring that no child we reach goes hungry this season.
Our plans for the initiative include:
• Nutritious meals for 5,000 children
• Basic care items
• Free Malaria Medications for 5000 Children
• Community engagement and support
• Logistics, transportation, and coordination
• Fun experiences that promote joy and dignity
Your involvement, whether through endorsement, social support, or partnership, would help us reach more people and multiply our impact.
We would be honoured to discuss more details with you or your team and explore how we can work together to bring joy and nourishment to thousands of children this December.
Thank you for your time, your heart for the people, and the light you continue to share through your art. I truly hope we can partner together to spread kindness, love, and nourishment to children who need it most.
With appreciation, Dr. Toluwani Binutu,
Do Better Today Foundation.
