This morning's news announced that Masako Nozawa (88), the voice actor for Goku in Dragon Ball, was selected as a Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government, the first voice actor to be recognized by the Japanese government. This is wonderful, but I would like to say that it may be far too late for the country to recognize anime culture. Masako Nozawa has played countless other famous characters besides Goku, and it is no exaggeration to say that "we were raised by her." Incidentally, the first manga artist to receive this award was Tetsuya Chiba (86), the creator of "Ashita no Joe," who only received it last year. It's far too late. It feels like the creators who supported the early days of anime and manga culture and should have received the award have been left out.
Good anime and excellent voice actors are inseparable, and in recent years their presence in Japan is beginning to surpass that of film actors. I hope this culture is recognized more. Masako Nozawa is still active and has said that she plans to continue until she is 182 years old. I sincerely hope that she will continue to be healthy and active.
