All this talk of pensions as a benefit or welfare seems to disregard the fact that the qualification for a full state pension (around 23% of average salaries) is 35 years of National Insurance contributions. It’s not a free gift.
@MartynRaftery State pensioners without any other income will become worse off compared to the working population. But I guess at least wealthy pensioners will be able to pass their wealth onto their siblings so there is that.
@MartynRaftery This reform will break the link with wage growth & state pension therefore lead to a reduction from the current 23% of average wages. Burnham suggested I think, that he expects the 2.5% floor to outstrip wage growth at some point. I’m not so sure about that.
@steverichards14 Think he’s successfully tied the LibDems to his side with social care, electoral reform, utilities & EU policy. Useful given how they have locked out the Tories in the south east while they dabble with ever more rightist policies.
@theobertram@NickCohen4 After I paid for sons of millionaires to get free university education they said it was unsustainable to provide free university education for my kids. Now I’ve paid my 40 years of NI contributions many say it’s unsustainable to protect the value of my state pension.
Sky News presenter when interviewer a pension expert says the state pension has gone up in line with inflation in recent years. And then says how much has it gone up. Pension expert says a lot. Wrong! The answer is it hasn’t gone up at all but kept its value.
@dave43law It’s extraordinary how US president & Rubio think it’s ok to interfere in UK politics. They are treating us as if we are a client state. Get off my screen I say!
@JohnLewisEU@andyjax@thatCarlosdude2 Much of the commentary around state pensions is uninformed. To qualify for a full pension you need 35 years of personal contributions. The cost escalates as you earn more for employee & ‘ers. Pension age is going to 68. Many have no other source of income. Pensions are taxable.
