On October 9, 1942, the USAAF 8th Air Force mounted its largest bombing operation to date from the United Kingdom.
115 B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators were dispatched against industrial targets in occupied Europe. 108 aircraft bombed their primaries, the Fives-Lille steel and engineering works in France and the Wilton-Fijenoord shipyards in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Four aircraft were lost.
The raid demonstrated that American precision daylight bombing, with tight formations providing mutual defensive fire, could reach targets across occupied Europe but at the same time, it was striking targets in France, not in Germany.
The far more formidable German fighter defences over the Reich remained untested.
Within a year, raids of this size against German targets would suffer casualty rates that threatened to make strategic bombing unsustainable.

On October 8, 1950, two F-80C Shooting Stars of the USAF 49th Fighter-Bomber Wing attacked what they believed was a North Korean airfield but was in fact the Soviet Sukhaya Rechka military airbase near Vladivostok, inside the Soviet Union. The pilots made a navigation error; one Soviet aircraft was damaged on the ground.
The Soviet Union filed a formal diplomatic protest, calling the attack a 'deliberate act of aggression.' Washington apologised and offered compensation, a rare Cold War moment of American contrition.
The incident illustrated the extreme danger of high-tempo air operations near Soviet territory during the Korean War.
Where geography forced US aircraft to fly close to both the Chinese and Soviet borders on almost every mission to the north.

On October 7, 1950, authorised by a UN General Assembly resolution and MacArthur's directive, US and ROK forces crossed the 38th parallel into North Korea in force.
A decision that transformed the Korean War from a defensive action into an attempt to reunify the peninsula by conquest.
China's Premier Zhou Enlai had warned through Indian diplomatic channels that China would intervene if non-Korean forces approached the Chinese border. MacArthur dismissed the warning. Within three weeks, nearly 300,000 Chinese People's Volunteer Army troops, who had crossed the Yalu River in secret, would overwhelm US and ROK forces at the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir and the Chongchon River. Inflicting the most stunning reversal of US fortunes since the beginning of the war and driving UN forces back below the 38th parallel.

Tirpitz vs King George V.
8 ร 15-inch guns vs 10 ร 14-inch guns.
Tirpitz is heavier, faster and hits harder โ but can King George V put enough rounds on target to win?

@BLackgold_5 The F18, the jet the US Air force rejected in favour of the F16. Combined they have had arguably the biggest force multiplier for many air forces. On the Hornet I would have to lean towards the growler version but it's like choosing a fav child when you look at the variants.

At 14:00 on October 6, 1973 on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, when Israel's military was at its lowest readiness โ Egypt and Syria launched simultaneous, coordinated surprise attacks.
Egypt crossed the Suez Canal with 100,000 troops while Syria attacked the Golan Heights.
The Israeli Air Force, expecting to dominate the battlefield as it had in 1967, flew directly into a wall of Soviet-supplied SA-6 and SA-7 surface-to-air missiles and ZSU-23-4 anti-aircraft guns that decimated the initial strikes.
49 Israeli aircraft were lost in the first three days of fighting.
The war fundamentally changed global air power doctrine by demonstrating that radar-guided SAMs had overtaken the offensive fighter in the tactical air war equation.
Every NATO air force rapidly re-evaluated its doctrine for operations in a SAM environment.

Could information superiority matter more than manoeuvrability? We explore it in a speculative Sea Power simulation.

On October 5-6, 1943, Rear Admiral Charles Pownall's Task Force 14, centred on USS Yorktown (CV-10), USS Essex (CV-9) and USS Independence (CVL-22) launched approximately 250 aircraft against the Japanese-held Wake Island.
This was the largest carrier air strike to hit Wake since the island fell in December 1941.
The raid destroyed 18 Japanese aircraft on the ground and damaged installations, but the operation was notably cautious.
Pownall refused to press home attacks despite calls from his aviators to do so, and the task force withdrew without conducting the planned sustained strikes.
The raid was a harbinger: American carrier aviation was growing rapidly in numbers and aggression, and within months the same ships would be supporting the assaults that would cut Japan's Pacific empire apart island by island.

At 22:28 UTC on October 4, 1957, an R-7 ICBM lifted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome and placed a polished aluminium sphere 58 centimetres in diameter into orbit around the Earth. Sputnik, Russian for 'travelling companion', weighed in at 83.6 kilograms and transmitted a simple radio tone at 20 and 40 MHz.
It was audible to any amateur operator on Earth, every 96 minutes as it completed an orbit.
The psychological shock in the United States was enormous: if the Soviets could put a satellite into orbit, they could put a nuclear warhead anywhere on the planet.
Congress immediately passed emergency education funding; NASA was created within a year; the Space Race began.
Sputnik re-entered the atmosphere and burned up on January 4, 1958 having completed 1,440 orbits.
