Do you know your staircase safety regs?
Handrails:
•A staircase should have handrails on both sides if it is wider than 1m.
•For stairs less than 1m wide, you should have a handrail on at least one side.
•A stair with a total rise of more than 600mm should have a handrail.

#Staircase#Metalwork#Structural
Is having the original architect’s blueprints essential when replacing a staircase?
Original plans for older buildings are often unavailable, making a structural assessment essential before beginning any significant renovation.
Your metalwork partner will be able to quickly identify the considerations you need to bear in mind when replacing structural elements like staircases and steels in any period property.
Take a minute to marvel at the metal…
The Eiffel Tower.
Iron Material: The Eiffel Tower is made of iron, not steel. Specifically, it’s constructed from more than 18,000 individual iron parts.
Temperature Effects: The iron expands and contracts with temperature changes. During hot summer days, the metal can expand, causing the tower to grow by up to 6 inches.
Craftsmanship: The tower’s iron components were prefabricated off-site.
New metalwork doesn’t have to mean stark, or stand out.
Different finishes can be applied to any new architectural metalwork – be it treads, handrails, balustrades, gates or railings, to make sure it blends in seamlessly with metalwork already in place.
Sometimes sample testing might be required, to ensure a perfect match to the original, before the main fabrication phase can take place. While every project differs, working with period or heritage metalwork can be a complex process that requires expert input to get it spot on.
