EN: Dive buddy with my wife. Real SE Asia notes, no face. Diary on the profile; buddy check linked above.
Buddy
EN: Before every dive we do a 30-second buddy check—gas, signals, where the alternate is. The day both my regs failed at 10 m, that habit mattered more than any camera shot.
@diywrapclub 1000 miles with kids is the real test. On long highway stretches I just run plain Autopilot, lane keeping plus adaptive cruise, and it takes a lot of the fatigue out. Did the third row actually get used, or did it end up as luggage space?
@PADI Gallery rules down there: hover a fin-length off, never kneel. Good trim and slow frog kicks keep the sand down, so the divers behind you still get the view.
@diveSSI@piratesdiveclub Ras Mohammed. Shark & Yolanda Reef, where the Suez and Aqaba currents meet. Sort out your trim before you go: staying flat and frog-kicking low in that current is what saves your gas.
@Lunadivingthai Heading to Phuket/Khao Lak over Chinese New Year. How's the vis been on the coral sites lately, and are you running Similan day trips this season?
Cairns for AOW is a great start. Did your instructor run the narcosis test at 30m?
@srrashmi1 Diver here. A club pool is the safest place to learn this. Ask them three things: is the instructor certified, how many students per instructor, and are they teaching her to equalize early and never hold her breath. If all three check out, you can breathe a bit easier too.
@scubadivingmag Two things went wrong before the pipe even mattered: going in alone, and still pushing under 500 psi. I turn at a third of my gas, and if there's anything overhead, my buddy stays at the entrance. No lobster is worth that.
Both Nitrox-certified — we've dived it at Malapascua.
Routine: analyze the tank yourself, match it to the label, know your MOD before you descend. The shop mixed it; you're the one breathing it.
Nitrox: test it yourself, or trust the shop?
Next week: what the Deep course changed
@tslaming Dates on the call are interesting. For daily driving what still matters to me is supervised Autopilot on highway and in traffic—the help I actually use now, not the unsupervised timeline.
@glyphclutter Respect. Most OW shops rent the full kit for the course — so the quit streak doesn't have to wait on buying gear. One clean week at a time 🤿
@JoeAlsaidd If “half load ≈ 10× F9 downlink” holds, the metric that matters is cost per bit. Reuse cadence is what turns that multiplier into real capacity.
@capetownmag Aquarium is great for nervous beginners to learn buoyancy without swell. Ocean current and vis are another sport — after cert, do a calm OW site soon so the muscle memory sticks.
@DANGlobalSafety Liveaboard tip that stuck with me: treat the first dive as a systems check for you and your buddy, not a photo run. Gear failure at sea is a different game than shore diving.
