It may be hard for most fans to grasp, but that’s because they don’t view their favorite teams the way owners do.

Most owners couldn’t name the league’s best players, and frankly, they don’t care. Their favorite stats aren’t batting average, ERA, or WAR; it’s profit margins, month‑over‑month revenue growth, and EBITDA. They don’t think in seasons like we do, and they couldn’t care less about playoff races. They think in fiscal quarters, obsessed with driving profits quarter after quarter. Their real playoff race is finding the fastest way to cut costs so they can finance their next mega‑yacht.

Their only objective is to create a supposedly “safe” asset, one that will never drop in value, so they can borrow against it to generate even more wealth. They want all the risk on the fans and players while they run to the bank with bigger paydays every year. A salary cap would only accelerate that trend.

It started with revenue sharing, which lets owners like Bob Nutting, Jerry Reinsdorf, and John Fisher field some of baseball’s worst teams on rock‑bottom payrolls and still turn a profit thanks to $110 million in shared revenue plus about $90 million per team from national TV deals. That’s roughly $200 million a year for simply EXISTING as a baseball team.

Now they want to cap how much their competitors can spend, ensuring the few teams still investing in winning can’t outspend everyone else. They want to level the playing field without pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps or doing any of the actual work.

Can you really blame them? After all, it’s not like they’ve ever done anything else.

Most of these owners are wealthy nepo‑babies who’ve been told their whole lives they can profit off others’ labor and offload their losses, too. They see fans as walking ATMs and players as the fat they need to trim. Essentially, the 30‑team ownership group views itself as the gods of baseball.

And when your gods care more about profit margins than win percentage, the sport is bound to suffer.
