Como arqueólogo, he tenido la suerte de trabajar en algunos de los lugares más hermosos de la Tierra. Xiis, Somalilandia: hace dos mil años, un lugar de encuentro entre África, Asia y Europa.
I analysed the reactions of Somalilanders to the recent decision and could not find a single person expressing support for the government or the President @Abdirahmanirro two days after the US department of state put out a report on Somaliland.
The decision to receive the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires based in neighboring Somalia, a country that remains existentially opposed to Somaliland’s sovereignty, has been met with widespread disapproval.
The Somaliland government has lost the support of its own people. It should listen to their concerns now, or risk consequences it may not be able to reverse later.

#BREAKING 🚨 Civil war erupts in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu!
Heavy clashes have engulfed the Failed state once again exposing the fragility of Somalia’s internationally backed political settlement.
Despite years of international intervention & billions in assistance, deadly fighting has broken out between forces aligned with the federal government whose provisional mandate has expired and opposition groups who seek power.
Reports indicate that heavy weapons, including equipment reportedly supplied by allies such as Türkiye and Egypt, are being deployed by forces aligned with the President as fighting intensifies.
The latest violence raises serious questions about the sustainability of Somalia’s political model & the effectiveness of continued international efforts to hold it together.
BREAKING Heavy gunfire has been heard through the night in Somalia's capital and smoke is rising over the city, AFP journalists report Thursday, as police say they have launched a major security operation against "militias"
@somalilandusa It's actually a great point! I tried to transfer responsibility for Somaliland from Mogadishu to Addis when I was Assistant Secretary. Having Embassy Mogadishu cover Hargeisa is rubbing salt into the wound and makes no sense. Somaliland is its own country!
One takeaway from this US State Dept report is the detrimental impact of Somaliland continuing to accommodate diplomatic staff based out of Mogadishu.
We now have another undeniable datapoint. By accepting this arrangement, @somalilandmfa is actively enabling the status quo.
The sooner Somaliland government brings in fixed wing and FPV drones into the country, the easier it will be for the army to claw territory back from the Somalian terrorist regime and its local proxies, and AL-Shabaab splinter groups operating in East Sool and Buhotle.
Israeli heron long range all weather drones would be an excellent choice in the interim as it will take a decade or so for us to establish an actual airforce.
Turks will certainly invade Somaliland from this area of the country. Hence security partnership with Israel should be a key national priority.

The video clearly shows the President of Mogadishu promoting antisemitic rhetoric through inflammatory and hostile remarks directed against Jews and Israel.
Somaliland exported 1.3 million sheep and goats, and 50,00 camels to Saudi Arabia & UAE in the peak Eidul Adha period this year. By volume, this is the largest meat export trade in the world. But Somaliland only earned circa $650 million. By contrast, Australia would've earned $3-5 billion exporting a quarter of the numbers before it banned livestock exports to the Gulf, in a fit of animal welfare Woke ideology. A nimble, dynamic Somaliland would've seen the opportunity, and grasped it to cement and increase in it's market share. It was an open goal, and we did not even see it.
A US base in Somaliland sells itself. It was a strong idea before the Iran war; now it is even more important.
As shown below, the point is not to replace Djibouti. It is to replacae several US bases in one place. It is to serve both AFRICOM and CENTCOM.
In other words, the point is to offer a position that can serve multiple theatres at once:
- The Arab Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz
- The Gulf of Aden and Bab al-Mandab
- The Arabian Sea and Somali piracy routes
- Somali terrorism threats in both northern and southern Somalia
- Iraq and Iran
All of this comes with a 100s km buffer in every direction, with no rival power nearby and almost out ot Iran's 2,500 mile missile radius.
Sen. Ted Cruz: "Somaliland promises to be a critical counterterrorism ally for the United States, both because of its strong willingness to partner with us and because of its unique location. We should recognize the Republic of Somaliland as an independent state and, in the meantime, significantly boost our counterterrorism cooperation."
Iran expert Lisa Daftari on why Tehran fears the small African state:
"Somaliland is offering the United States what the mullahs fear most in this theater — an alternative, resilient platform on the African shore that includes an airfield, port, and over-the-horizon access that would dilute Houthi leverage and give Washington options that don't depend on Djibouti or Persian Gulf partners alone."
The breakaway state overlooks the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, where Houthis have choked global shipping.
“The war in the Middle East has elevated Somaliland’s strategic importance. We are ready to partner with the US to secure the Red Sea against Houthi and Iranian threats.”

My Somaliland people. This should be a teachable moment for all of us.
Dont let anyone, friend or foe, hijack your story or exploit you for clout.
Qadiyadaada cidnaba hawga daba fadhiisan, oo yaan marnaba lagugu daneysan.
This is an unprecedented moment in our history. Foojignaada billaa calayk. Social media personalities might have different priorities than you.
Lessons learned.
H.E. President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) today received a telephone call from the Prime Minister of the State of Israel, who conveyed congratulations on the occasion of 18 May and the 35th Anniversary of the Republic of Somaliland’s Reassertion of Sovereignty.
🎉 Happy 35th Independence Day, Somaliland!
Since May 18, 1991, Somaliland has stood as a symbol of resilience, peace, and democracy.
Following Israel’s historic recognition in 2025, this year marks an exciting new chapter.

Congratulations to Dr. Mohamed Haji on his appointment as Somaliland’s Ambassador to Israel. @AmbMohamedHagi
We met in Washington last year, even before the announcement of the establishment of relations, and discussed the great potential for cooperation between Israel and Somaliland.
This appointment is another important step in strengthening the relationship between our peoples. I wish you great success in this role.
Somaliland is quietly emerging as a strategic Red Sea hub and functioning democracy in one of the world’s most volatile regions. Is it time the West pays more attention to it? My latest for @ConHome
