@calamityjon I don't think any of my work is even a pimple on the ass of what Lee or Ditko achieved. But I thought that was more elegant than saying "I fucking hate this". So by comparison, Jon, I consider your write-up a rave! I did like a lot of the new series that happened later, though...
@calamityjon Part 4: And then I asked what he imagined Stan Lee or Steve Ditko might have thought in the unlikely event they read that story. He murmured something about good characters being able to weather some re-interpretation, then recalled he'd left a baby on the stove and hurried off.
@calamityjon Part 3: In a phone conversation, said staffer asks me what I thought of those new stories he'd sent. I didn't answer directly. Instead, I mentioned that couple years earlier, I'd read a story where Spider-Man used his clinging power to Pull a Villain's Face Off. Deliberately.
@calamityjon Part two: The girl had superpowers and was perfectly capable of defending herself, but Slapstick didn't know that. She knocked the crap out of him and escaped, thank gawd, but I thought that a savage assault against seemingly defenseless teenager was Not a Good Look for My Hero.
@calamityjon Funny story, part one: A few years ago, a Marvel staffer sent me a few issues of some DEADPOOL comics that featured Slapstick as part of Deadpool's team, the Mercs for Money. In one issue, Slapstick attacks a teenage girl with his bigass hammer.
@calamityjon And don't worry about Slapstick. The foreword of your book made it pretty clear (I thought) that you don't hate those characters. And even if you did, if your piece prompted even one reader to check Slap out, I'm pretty happy.
@rejectedjokes Just to be clear: I have NO AUTHORITY WHATSOVER re: what happens to any projects featuring these characters. Just wanted to let you know I'm a fan of your work.
@rejectedjokes Dude, I co-created SLAPSTICK with Len Kaminski, back in the 90s. Slap may never get his own movie, but if he does, after that interview you did last year, I hope they hire you to do his voice!
@te_mech Hey, TM. At first I had no idea what you were talking about, until I saw the panels in question. As for where I got ref for any of the toys---ur guess is as good as mine. Thirty years, amigo!
Hey, Ben. I co-created SLAPSTICK, and loved reading that he was a childhood fave of yours. If I had ANY say in ANY MCU matters (trust me, that will never happen), the job would be yours.
