Remembering the two directors of Disney's "The Rescuers," both of whom died on this day: May 22. Woolie Reitherman died in a car accident in 1985, age 75; Art Stevens died from a heart attack in 2007, age 92. The film's 3rd director – John Lounsbery – died mid-production in 1976.

BORN ON THIS DAY: Ernie Pintoff (1931-2002), director of Fight On For Old, Blues Pattern, Flebus, The Violinist, The Interview, the Oscar-winning The Critic, etc

Pintoff gave up animation & moved into live-action, directing episodes of Kojak, MacGyver, The Dukes of Hazzard, etc

Animator appreciation: Bernie Wolf, pictured on left, animated the Cab Calloway walrus in Minnie the Moocher (Fleischer, Studios, 1932), Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio (Disney, 1940), and Garfield in Garfield's Feline Fantasies (Film Roman, 1990).

"It was a strange thing," McKimson said of his newfound abilities. "None of the doctors could give me any explanation for it. They said I probably jarred something loose in my brain. It was very simple for me to do this; it wasn't any work."

Warner Bros. animator (and later, director) Bob McKimson claimed that following a severe auto accident in 1932 which pinched nerves in his neck, he gained the ability to animate faster. He went from a weekly animation output of 13-20 seconds to 30-50 seconds.

BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1907: Fleischer Studios animator Willard Bowsky. He was killed on November 27, 1944, at the age of 37, during WWII combat in France.

Bowsky was one of the studio's star artists, and worked as an animator on over 75 Popeye, Betty Boop, and Superman shorts. He was promoted to the role of directing animator and oversaw most of the studio's iconic jazz cartoons.
