A Plan to Give Away Britain's Nuclear Umbrella Is Sitting on Jonathan Powell's Desk

Britain's nuclear deterrent exists to protect Britain. That has been the plain, uncontested premise since the first submarine put to sea. A new proposal now circulating inside government would change that premise entirely, and it has reached the desk of the one adviser whose judgement on matters like this deserves the least benefit of the doubt.

The plan, drawn up by Nick Boles, a former Conservative MP who defected to help Labour prepare for power, would see Britain extend Trident's protective umbrella across a new "European Confederation" including Ukraine, Switzerland, Norway and the Western Balkan states, alongside a commitment to spend 3.5 percent of GDP on defence. In return, Britain would gain access to the EU's single market for goods, without free movement, without eurozone membership, and without a seat at the table where the rules governing that market are written.

Set aside, for a moment, whether the trade is a good one. Consider first what kind of decision this is. Committing British nuclear protection to states outside NATO is not a technical adjustment to trade policy. It is among the most serious sovereign commitments a country can make, a promise that Britain would risk catastrophic retaliation to defend nations it currently has no formal obligation toward. Decisions of that magnitude have traditionally required a manifesto commitment, sustained parliamentary debate, and a government with a clear mandate. This one has had none of that. It has had a think tank paper and a circulation list.

Boles is candid about where things stand. The plan is not government policy. Burnham has not decided whether to pursue it. Hamish Falconer, the new Brexit minister, says only that a future manifesto might address the question. Yet despite all of that uncertainty, the proposal has already been sent to Jonathan Powell, the National Security Adviser, for consideration.

That detail should trouble anyone who has followed Powell's record. This is the same adviser who built the Chagos surrender in a private capacity before his appointment, whose vetting status has never been confirmed, and whose meetings with Chinese officials Parliament has been blocked from examining. A man whose judgement on Britain's most sensitive strategic questions has repeatedly gone untested by scrutiny is now positioned near the centre of a plan that would extend nuclear protection to a country currently at war, without any democratic mandate behind the decision.

The financial logic deserves equal scrutiny. Britain would fund a permanent, expanded security shield for the Continent, underwriting nations it cannot currently be compelled to defend, while accepting rules it has no power to shape. That is not rejoining the EU with influence restored. It is paying full membership costs, now in blood-guarantee terms as well as cash, for associate status. Starmer's own attempt to secure single market access on far more modest terms was rejected outright by Brussels. Boles has not found a better negotiating position. He has found a larger concession, repackaged as generosity toward Ukraine and Brussels's own migration headaches so it reads as diplomacy rather than desperation.

Britain's nuclear deterrent was built to answer to the British public alone. A plan to widen who it protects, drawn up outside government and passed to an adviser whose own transparency record remains the subject of live parliamentary concern, deserves scrutiny before it becomes policy, not after.

Downing Street claims it’s “not possible” to prevent “one or two” killers from being released early.

No 10 maintained that Prime Minister Andy Burnham is “far from accepting the situation” but seemed to downplay the possibility of an imminent carve-out to keep Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers incarcerated.

Essentially, Andy can’t do anything to keep PC Andrew Harper’s killers in prison unless he changes the law which would then affect all prisoners.

Abdul Khan arrived in Britain in the back of a lorry in 2015.

Ten years later, he’s been jailed for raping a 13-year-old girl in a nature reserve in Clifton, Nottingham.

He found her on Snapchat and told her he was a 14-year-old boy. When she turned up and saw a grown man, he adjusted the lie to 16. Then he raped her. Twice.

Here’s the part that should end careers. He was already serving 23 months for sexual communication with a different child in Derbyshire. Police only linked him to this attack because they seized his phone when they arrested him for that.

The DNA came back. He still denied ever meeting her. Denied his own age. Denied his own identity. His barrister stood up and admitted he had nothing to offer in mitigation, because his client wouldn’t stop lying long enough to let him.

Nine and a half years. Out after two thirds. Deported to Afghanistan after that.

The girl says she feels numb. Sees his face in flashbacks. Can’t trust anyone.

She got a life sentence. He got a departure date. Get. Them. Out.
