Let me explain what Batik is.
Batik is a traditional textile art form that uses a wax resist dyeing technique.
Itโs a method where patterns are drawn or stamped onto cloth using hot wax.
The waxed areas resist the dye, so when the fabric is dyed, those parts stay the original color.
The process is often repeated multiple times with different colors to create complex, multi layered designs.
The result is a beautiful patterned fabric that can be used for clothing, sarongs, scarves, home decor, etc.
The word โbatikโ comes from the Javanese language:
โBaโ = cloth
โTikโ = little dot or point (referring to the dotted patterns created by the wax)
Where is it from?
Indonesia.. specifically the island of Java.
Batik has been practiced in Indonesia for over 1,000 years.
It reached its highest artistic level in cities like Yogyakarta, Surakarta (Solo), Pekalongan, and Cirebon.
In 2009, UNESCO officially recognized Indonesian Batik as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Different regions in Indonesia have their own signature styles and meanings (e.g., geometric patterns, nature motifs, or royal symbols).
Batik is worn on formal occasions in Indonesia (weddings, ceremonies, even office wear on Fridays).
It has become popular in fashion worldwide, including in K-pop (as seen with idols like Hongjoong wearing modern batik shirts). ๐โโ๏ธ๐ซถ๐ป
