The United States stood on the brink of war with Spain over Cuba during the Virginius Affair.

Nathan Bedford Forrest wrote General William T. Sherman offering his services as a volunteer. He said he could raise 1,000 to 5,000 former Southern soldiers on short notice and assemble them at New Orleans, Mobile, Pensacola, or Key West as either cavalry or infantry.

Sherman forwarded the letter to the War Department. He called Forrest one of the most extraordinary men produced by the Civil War and stated that if war came and cavalry was needed, he would unhesitatingly accept Forrest’s services and give him a prominent place.

Less than a decade after the war, the man who had once been Sherman’s most feared opponent stood ready to fight for the United States.
