Saturn is guardian of the threshold

Between the material and spiritual worlds, the gateway between eternity and the realm of time and space. The most distant and slowest moving of the visible planets, Saturn is where the descent into matter begins. It is the planet of restriction and inhibition. As the lord of order, self knowledge, and discipline, Saturn can be a severe task maker. It governs all condensing, crystallizing, and hardening processes, ruling the skeleton and aging.

Time is both a creator and a destroyer, for it is a perpetual beginning as well as an end to something. In Time all that is false shall pass away, and in Time all that is true shall be realized and established. Time is the acid test, and only that which can survive its ravages is worthy to be termed permanent. Time has dominion over all that is untrue, unreal or perverse.

One by one the fallacies of life fall beneath the reaping scythe of Time, and are garnered into the capacious bin of oblivion. In Time all forms must die, in Time all worlds must cease, in Time the very universe will be resolved back into its primal state, in Time are contained all beginnings and all ending, for Time is the lord of the illusion of beginnings and endings.

Time is the master of the mortal sphere and all that exists within it. Time preserves for a little while the perishable only that ultimately it shall perish more completely.

Campbell spent decades studying the mythologies of every major civilization and arrived at one central conclusion: the myths are not stories about external beings. They are maps of the inner world.

When the Greeks spoke of Ares, they were speaking about the force of rage and war that lives in every human psyche. When they spoke of Aphrodite, they were describing the principle of love and beauty that moves through human experience.

When Dante descended through hell, he was not traveling through a theological location. He was traveling through the territory of the human unconscious.

Jung made the same observation through the language of depth psychology. The archetypes, the Hero, the Shadow, the Anima, the Wise Old Man, the Trickster, are not abstract concepts. They are living forces within the psyche that activate under specific conditions and shape behavior from below the threshold of awareness.

Every god that any culture has ever worshipped corresponds to a real psychological principle that every human being carries. The mythology is the map. The territory is you.

The Hermetic tradition stated this directly: the human being is a microcosm of the macrocosm. Everything that exists in the universe exists within the human soul in miniature.

This means the heaven you are waiting for is not elsewhere. Neither is the hell you are trying to avoid. Both are conditions of the inner life, available now, determined by what you choose to cultivate.
