Authenticity has been my biggest struggle growing up. Over the past 2 years, I went back to the basics and did tons of journaling and self discovery. Finally I am at the point I am not trying to make everyone happy but instead just being myself. Purpose now seems so much clearer.
My dad never took cold showers.
Or wrote in a journal (stopped going to school in 6th grade).
Or created a schedule (only schedule was get up and go to work).
Or had a Notion system.
He didn’t even have SOPs…
And yet…
8 convenience stores
5 commercial properties
Top 1% income since mid 90s
My observation and reminder to myself is to not complicate things.
And to clearly identify what causes a desired outcome.
For fat loss, it’s being in a calorie deficit.
To make more money, it’s to provide something to people that they want.
I’ve gotten lost since I first read 4 hour work week when it came out.
I was focused more on the form vs the function as @PeterNicson and @TheGuardianAcad would say.
Always looking for new tools and shiny objects instead of getting the job done with the simplest tool in front of me.
@PeterNicson always shares this example of a person who needed to screw something and they go on a screwdriver search to find the best screwdriver.
All while the butter knife in the drawer would have gotten the job done.
I’ve been a “search for a perfect screwdriver” type of guy.
Even though I grew up with the example of my father who is the most “use the butter knife to get the job done” type of guy you’ll find.
And over the last few years I’ve realized how many millions of dollars this probably has cost me.
And it’s painful to admit to myself. Or to anyone else.
The funny thing is that when it comes to my fitness and health….I’ve been the butter knife guy for almost 15 years.
The results are clear.
35, stronger, leaner, and more athletic than 99% of people.
I often wonder what caused me to not apply these principles in my business life when I clearly applied them to my body.
But then I realize that it’s not important.
Because exploring that question doesn’t give me the result I want.
Using the butter knife today will.
And although I still struggle, I know I will get to the other side. And leave this old version of me behind.
