@DiabetesDataJim So glad Epic allows this but prevents us from doing anything truly ridiculous like getting daily chest x-rays or worse, scheduling an AM CBC for more than 1 day at a time.
Things I needed to hear before Match Week:
1. You are more than a match result.
2. Your worth goes far beyond where an algorithm sorts you.
3. No matter the result, you’re still a worthy human being.
4. No matter what, take this moment
to celebrate how far you’ve come.
A reminder that rest isn’t something that we have to earn and taking a break from work doesn’t have to be about boosting productivity later on.
Resting and taking breaks can be about remembering who we are apart from work and honoring ourselves and others as human beings.
The lack of diversity in the genomics workforce is a consequence of a larger set of societal barriers and this lack of diversity directly hinders progress in genomics.
I share this because I think it's an important reminder that no matter how someone was raised or what they were taught as a child, hatred and bigotry are always a choice.
My grandmother passed away yesterday, 2 months shy of her 100th birthday. While there are many things I could say about her, the one story I want to share is the one where I told her my partner, whom she had met prior to their transition, was transgender.
And then she said, "God doesn't make mistakes. He knew what He was doing when He brought you two together so Alex would have someone to support them in this." And she thanked me for telling her and told me she loved both of us just as much as she had before.
@MelindaAldrich I won't deny the slight satisfaction I feel at the look on their faces when I (usually) politely correct them with, "Actually, no, I'm a doctor."
The message we communicate to students when we don't accommodate mental health issues is that the "real world" won't accept their mental illness. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. But if it is true, that's not the real world I want to usher any student into. 5/5

My patient today explaining why middle school is better than elementary school: "The bathrooms are so much nicer! In elementary school, there are so many little kids and they have accidents and pee on the floor. People don't do that in middle school."
Unsolicited advice to #Match2023 : go where you will be supported, heard and your goals nurtured. Residency is hard & no prestige is worth your mental health. You thrive best in soft environments, not hostile ones.
Genomics is becoming a bigger part of patient care, but healthcare providers may not be aware of available genomics education resources. The more healthcare providers understand genomics, the more we can help patients understand the role of genomics in their health.
My sister to her husband: "At least you got appendicitis the year we had a baby! That was so expensive that we met our deductible, so now you can get it out for free!"
This quote brought to you by the disaster that is the American health insurance system.
Sometimes it's hard being a pediatric resident. For example, today I had to break the news to a 6-year-old that she could not take the helicopter that brought her in back home. Even if it was "so much faster".
