My grandmother passed away yesterday, 2 months shy of her 100th birthday. While there are many things I could say about her, the one story I want to share is the one where I told her my partner, whom she had met prior to their transition, was transgender.

And then she said, "God doesn't make mistakes. He knew what He was doing when He brought you two together so Alex would have someone to support them in this." And she thanked me for telling her and told me she loved both of us just as much as she had before.

Just once, I would love for someone seeing me in my scrubs on my way to or from work to assume I'm a doctor instead of a nurse.

The message we communicate to students when we don't accommodate mental health issues is that the "real world" won't accept their mental illness. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. But if it is true, that's not the real world I want to usher any student into. 5/5

Genomics is becoming a bigger part of patient care, but healthcare providers may not be aware of available genomics education resources. The more healthcare providers understand genomics, the more we can help patients understand the role of genomics in their health.

Sometimes it's hard being a pediatric resident. For example, today I had to break the news to a 6-year-old that she could not take the helicopter that brought her in back home. Even if it was "so much faster".
