We are masters at the paperwork. We can tell you exactly how much is needed for a Proof of Funds or how to ace an IELTS exam.
But very few of us have a plan for that first Tuesday night in a cold apartment when the house is too quiet and home feels too far away.
In Nigeria, you don't really have to try to have a community. It’s just there. Between your neighbors, your church/mosque, your colleagues, and your extended family, you are constantly seen.
Abroad, you start as a ghost.
You move from a place where everyone knows your name to a place where you are just the person in Apartment 4B.
There’s a specific way Nigerians laugh together. When you can't find anyone who understands your jokes without an explanation, it feels like a piece of you is missing.
Because you feel lonely doesn’t mean you made a mistake, It just means you are in between two lives.
Your social muscles are used to things being easy, but now you have to train them to be intentional.
This is how you can prepare rmotionally
1. Lower your expectations for speed: Friendships abroad take time. Don't be discouraged if you don't have a friend in three months.
2. Schedule your home calls: Don't just wait for a crisis to call home. Build a routine so you don't feel disconnected from the family flow.
3. Find your people early: Join a gym, a local hobby group, or a community center. You need to be around humans, even if you don't talk to them yet.
A visa gets you into the country, but community keeps you sane inside it.
For those abroad, What did you do to handle the silence in your first few months? Share your tips below.
@ARISEtv I watched this live and I think this Hon Adepoju deserves some flowers. He didn't mince words. Unfortunately, Nigeria has degenerated and these charlatans in power doesn't look like they will back down on their decisions. May God help us.

@datboyneema @Oludeewon I'm a publisher and I know the adverse effect of this act on the business. You don't ruin people's investments just for self gratification. I'm confident that @copyrightngr and @WIPO the regulatory bodies for intellectual property rights and protection will step in shortly.
