“I shall have food, as you offer,” said Stank. “I’ve an empty belly after this length of pretending.”

“Yes, indeed. What a performance! You were superb. You played it fine. Please: indulge. Eat as you wish.”

Ignoring the compliments, Stank sidled up to the counterboard where all manner of foods had been set out for guests’ #consuming. He started pinching a piece of meat, slivers of a well-grilled cow. He took a hank of hog. Gathered strings of noodles, bits of beans, slices of tomato, squares of cheese, and the end of a loaf of brown bread. The girls behind the counterboard stood in amazement how much he put away. They offered him a plate, which he refused. They offered napkins, which he took at the end, wiping his mouth and then his hands. They showed him a large pie. He took the cut quarter in one hand, quaffed it down like a beverage.

“Ah! There you are,” called Duke Lindo, returning to Stank, like the warrior represented an innocent isle in an ocean of biting beasts. “Her Majesty has agreed to see you. I’m surprised, yet not. This is a great honor, so pull on your best behavior.”

“My behavior is my behavior,” Stank replied, wiping his mouth of berry juice with the back of his hand.
