2025 Sports in Kansas Non-Senior Defensive Player of the Year – Large Classes (6A, 5A, 4A)
Cooper Ohnmacht – DB/ATH/WR, Great Bend High School, Jr.
A dynamic junior with size, length, and elite multi-sport measurables, Great Bend’s Cooper Ohnmacht emerged as one of the most explosive underclass playmakers in Kansas 🏈. At 6’0”, 185 pounds with a 38.5-inch vertical, 4.5 speed, and big jumps in track (48’3” triple jump, 22’10.5” long jump, 182’ javelin), Ohnmacht’s athletic profile fits the prototype of a modern FBS DB/ATH/WR who can win on either side of the ball.
Offensively, Ohnmacht totaled 700+ receiving yards and 8 touchdowns, surpassing 1,200 all-purpose yards while impacting games as a receiver, ballcarrier, and return threat. On defense, he added 57 tackles and 5 interceptions, showing the instincts and physicality that have made him one of the fastest-rising Power 4–level prospects in the Midwest. He now holds multiple FBS offers, with continued interest increasing from high majors.
While the spotlight in Great Bend often centers on Top 11 All-Classes athlete Ian Premer, the Panthers aren’t driven by a single star. Ohnmacht’s breakout season, along with rising recruit Kale Kern and the elite play of Tanner Geist at Hays, made this one of the strongest fields for underclass honors statewide on defense. #sportsinkansas
Ian Premer of Great Bend made it official by signing with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this morning🏈. Premer, a 5 star TE, is the best three sport athlete in Kansas. As Chet Kuplen put it at yesterday’s Sports in Kansas Top 11 event. “He’s the best three sport athlete we’ve ever covered. He has an opportunity this season to be Top 11🏈, Top 5🏀, and Top 9⚾️. And he’s already been first team 5A twice with a year left in all three of those sports.” Premer was a hybrid athlete for the Panthers as a senior and his stat line shows just that: 620 rushing (14 TD), 734 receiving (14 TD), 123 return yards, 68 tackles, 6 interceptions, 164 interception return yards, two pick six, and blocked field goal. 🤯 #sportsinkansas photo: Great Bend HS
Great Bend held off a late Hays comeback to win 29-22 and advance to the 5A Final Four. With the victory, the Panthers moved to 11-0 for the first time in school history under HC Erin Beck. They’ll now host Salina Central in a massive matchup with a trip to the 5A state championship on the line. #sportsinkansas
