🗳️ HuffPost attempts to turn critique of Democratic establishment into racial scandal

HuffPost appears to be attempting to smear William Lawrence, a pro-Palestine progressive challenger running for the Democratic nomination in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, with a misleading headline claiming he said “Black Democratic Leaders ‘Defang the White Left.’”

On a September 2024 episode of his podcast, Lawrence, a Sunrise Movement co-founder, had argued that older Black political leaders have become a key institutional base of the Democratic establishment, helping sustain capitalist and imperial U.S. power.

He said this repeatedly blocks left-wing organizing and puts white progressive organizers like himself in a politically difficult position because challenging those leaders is then framed as challenging Black political power itself.

“It’s a big problem for left politics in this country,” he said.

He then pointed to younger Black voters moving away from Democrats and asked his guest, a co-founder of Black 4 Palestine, whether a younger Black left could break that dynamic and help build a different political alignment.

Since the article’s publication, centrist Democrats and certain Democratic Party officials have seized on the HuffPost story to demand that various groups and lawmakers revoke their endorsements of Lawrence.

Lawrence, who is endorsed by Bernie Sanders and Rashida Tlaib expressed regret for the “clumsy” way he expressed the point, while noting that “a SuperPAC run by D.C. insiders and tied to [AIPAC] is spreading ridiculous smears about me because I’m the only candidate who will take on the billionaire class and the pro-war lobby,”

⚡️ Armed Israeli settlers blocked Rep. Ro Khanna from leaving Khirbet Zanuta in the occupied West Bank for 90 minutes as Israeli troops stood by and later blocked the road, the New York Times reports citing footage shared by the congressman and his team.

Khanna was on a three-day, Palestinian-led tour of the West Bank, meeting Palestinian families, local officials and business owners and visiting communities subjected to settler violence, displacement and intrusive Israeli restrictions.

“One of the things it’s made me realize is how hard a two-state solution is going be in practice, that it’s going require the removal of a lot of violent settlers,” he told the New York Times.

Khanna also said the racism was unmistakable: “In Palestine, I felt first as someone who was brown,” he said. “We really saw the apartheidlike conditions, the inequality.”
