"How's my son/daughter doing?"
Every grassroots coach dreads this question.
You've got 15 kids. No assistant. No notes. Just vibes.
We built Touchline to change that 🧵👇
Quick drill for coaches struggling with players who panic on the ball:
'Pass and Move in a Box' - 4 players, 10x10 yard square, 2 balls
Rule: You MUST move to a new corner after every pass
Watch the magic happen - they stop thinking, start playing
Sometimes the best sessions are the simplest ones ⚽

Your child's coach just spent 90 minutes of their Saturday morning helping 16 kids fall in love with football.
They planned the session during their lunch break yesterday. They'll wash muddy bibs tonight.
That 'thank you' after the session? It means everything to them 💙

Saturday morning on the sideline watching your child play?
Here's what to look for beyond the score:
• Are they talking to teammates?
• Do they keep trying after a mistake?
• Are they encouraging others?
• Do they track back when they lose the ball?
These moments matter more than any goal

U12s struggling with passing under pressure?
Try this progression:
1. Start with unopposed passing in pairs
2. Add a passive defender (just shadow, no tackling)
3. Active defender but 2-touch minimum
4. Full pressure, any touch
Give them success before you add the challenge. Confidence first, then technique under pressure.

The Saturday morning car ride to football:
"Mum, will you watch me score?"
"Dad, can we get McDonald's after?"
"I forgot my shin pads... again"
That 15-minute journey full of excitement, nerves, and the odd forgotten boot.
Sometimes the car ride is just as important as the match itself.

Saturday morning car ride to football:
"Did we win?"
"How many goals did I score?"
"Am I the best player?"
Try this instead:
"What was the most fun part?"
"Did you help a teammate?"
"What did you learn today?"
Those conversations shape how they see the game forever ⚽
Saturday morning session starter for U12s:
1️⃣ Ball juggling in pairs (5 mins) - builds touch and concentration
2️⃣ 1v1 gates (10 mins) - decision making under pressure
3️⃣ 4v2 possession squares (15 mins) - quick passing and movement
Warm bodies, sharp minds, ready to learn. The foundation of every good session starts with getting them switched on early ⚽

Your child didn't score today but did you see how they encouraged their teammate who missed?
Did you notice them tracking back to help defend?
Did you catch them making that perfectly weighted pass?
Football development isn't always about goals. Sometimes it's about character.

Session structure that works every time for U11-U13s:
5 min - Dynamic warm-up (high knees, butt kicks, light jogging)
10 min - Technical work (1v1, passing in pairs, first touch)
15 min - Skill application (3v2, 4v3 overloads)
20 min - Small-sided games (7v7 or 8v8)
5 min - Cool down & reflection
The secret? Keep the technical work short and sharp. Their attention spans aren't built for 20-minute passing drills.
Transition between activities quickly. Have your next drill set up while they're finishing the current one.
And always end with questions: 'What worked well today?' 'What did you find challenging?'
Makes them think about their own learning instead of just waiting for the car home.

Weekend football reminder for parents:
Your child might not score tomorrow. They might lose every tackle. The pass might go to the wrong team.
But if you see them encourage a teammate, track back to help defend, or try something they've been working on in training - that's your win right there.
Development isn't always in the goals column ⚽

Friday night and your child's fallen asleep with muddy boots still on from training.
That exhausted smile says everything about how much they loved tonight's session.
Sometimes the best development happens when they don't even realise they're learning. Just pure joy on a football pitch. ⚽

Friday night and your child's fallen asleep with muddy boots still by the door
Tomorrow they'll be up at 7am asking if it's match day yet
Football families know this rhythm by heart
The anticipation, the early mornings, the post-match car rides home
This is how memories are made ⚽ #GrassrootsFootball
Friday night and your child's fallen asleep with muddy boots still by the door from tonight's training.
They came home buzzing about that one pass they made, the save they pulled off, how the coach said 'well done' when they tried something new.
This is what grassroots football is really about. Not the score, not the league table - just that spark in their eyes when they talk about the game.
Every parent watching from the sideline this weekend, remember: you're not just watching football. You're watching confidence grow.

Your child came home from training tonight talking about 'checking their shoulder' and 'finding space'.
They might not have scored. They might not have won.
But they're learning to think like a footballer.
That's proper development right there ⚽

Saturday morning on the sideline checklist:
✓ Coffee (essential)
✓ Warm coat (it's always colder than expected)
✓ Positive words ready (they're trying their best)
✓ Phone on silent (let them focus)
✓ Smile (they'll look for you after that good pass)
The most important thing you bring? Your presence. Not your advice from the touchline.

Your club's biggest asset isn't the facilities or the kit budget.
It's the coaches who show up every week, plan sessions, and genuinely care about every player's development.
Invest in them. Support them. Make them feel valued.
Retain your coaches = retain your families = grow your club.
#GrassrootsFootball
Your club committee meetings don't have to be 3-hour marathons.
Quick agenda tip: Start every meeting with 'What are we celebrating?' then move to 'What needs fixing?'
Celebration energises the room. Problems feel smaller when you remember what's working.
Try it next week ⚽

Equal playing time at grassroots isn't just fair - it's smart coaching.
Yes, your best players could probably win more games with extra minutes. But here's what you miss:
→ Your 'weaker' players improve faster with more touches
→ Squad depth builds over the season
→ Parents stay engaged (and keep volunteering)
→ Kids learn football is about development, not just winning
→ You discover hidden talents in pressure moments
At U8-U14, every child deserves their chance to grow. The trophies gather dust - the confidence you build lasts forever.

Your child's coach just spent their Thursday evening planning this weekend's session.
After a full day at work. Unpaid. Because they care about helping your kid fall in love with football.
A simple 'thank you' after the session means more than you know.
#GrassrootsFootball
Weekend football is here and your child's coach has spent hours planning tomorrow's session.
They've thought about the warm-up, the main drills, how to keep everyone engaged, and what to work on based on last week.
That's 2-3 hours of unpaid time because they believe in your child's development.
Just thought you should know that.
