Two heroes were killed Wednesday when a U.S. Army Apache helicopter from Fort Hood crashed in Salado, Texas.

As a West Point graduate and former Apache helicopter pilot myself, this tragedy hits especially close to home.

I know the aircraft.

And I know the extraordinary men and women who answer the call to climb into that cockpit and serve our country.

Every flight carries with it an immense responsibility, and every soldier who takes to the skies does so knowing the risks that come with defending this nation.

Emily and I are praying for those we lost, their families and loved ones, and the entire Fort Hood and Army Aviation community grieving tonight.

Their service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.

“I’m just a girl, I have school tomorrow!”

Those were the words 12-year-old Liel Hetzroni pleaded to the Palestinian terrorists who abducted her during the October 7 attack.

They murdered her anyway.

It took forensic investigators nearly six weeks to identify what remained of her. All that was left of the little girl’s body was ash and bone fragments.

Her father, Gavin Heller, told the BBC that Liel and her brother were killed for one reason only: “because they were Jewish.”

He described the identification process: “They just found remnants of Liel… initially they didn’t have enough pieces to make a formal identification. They identified her literally by sieving the remnants. This will unfortunately live with me for the rest of my life.”

Nearly 1,200 people, almost all Jewish Israelis, were massacred that day.

Some called it “justified resistance.” It was the deliberate slaughter of civilians, including children.

Liel Hetzroni was 12 years old.

I truly believe that reading verses 16-17 together is necessary not just reading 17 for context here. To say we have fellowship with God, but walk in darkness is not being truthful. Verse 17 as we walk in the light we receive the continual cleansing of Jesus.
