@MarcusLuther6 We are in a traditional 7 period day with an additional 30 minute study hall and formed a committee to review said schedule this year as it’s not working for us either. I worry about continuity with the block but chaos/exhaustion emerges with the 7/8 we have. What to do?

@ambernoelle My kid lucked out here in middle school because Covid shut things down but freshman year has been a lot of drama with friend groups. Since my kid goes to school where I teach, it’s been a year of many gut punches followed by the enthusiastic “hey, let’s unpack this poem!”

@cultofpedagogy We teach our high school students to use the CRAAP test and, while I know there are criticisms of it, it’s worked much more effectively than any other approach at my school.

@ProdigalHoosier IN teacher here: the state is indeed looking at eliminating these fees by requiring schools to cover the costs without increasing funding to schools to cover said costs. If it goes through, there will be cuts.

@thehodgenator My version of this yesterday was Student (with anger): Ms. Kyle-you didn’t hang my project on the wall!! Me: You didn’t turn it in. Student: I did! Me: waits. Student: checks folder, finds assignment.

@susangbarber I’d taught seniors only for ten years and then picked up a sophomore group this year. The learning curve has been steep. The tired is real.

@DorianSpeed @Pyewacketstare @dieworkwear Yep I feel that! But I found a really good YouTube tutorial that shows the steps well which moved me from about an hour to about ten mins to thread it (and I just follow along each time).

@EnglishElective I have a wanderer in my 10th grade class; he can’t seem to sit in his seat and just meanders all period long. Today though, he bothered too many kids trying to work and he got the mom glare big time.

@EThorntonGHS And stop with the slippery slope reasoning of just because your high school didn’t do one particular thing, it stands to reason that no high schools anywhere teach said thing. Like most school do teach and require economics.

@sage_stage We do this at my school for Algebra and Geometry but that’s it, I think. In English, since four years are required to graduate, we can’t or in practice a student would not be able to graduate in four years (summer school is hit and miss here as an option).

@rhsteach @AnnaMSutter I was going to say the same, with the addition of “I did this research!” and then moved to a state which outlawed salary schedules based on experience and my salary took a nosedive (thanks, IN). I would have been fine had the entire premise of my pay not been changed mid-career.

@aliner @allisonjoseph I was just going to say the same thing. And when I start teaching the sonnet to my seniors in a couple of weeks, I’m going to share this sentiment (they love knowing what and how authors really think/write).

@AnnaMSutter It’s so kind of you to ask! Focus on standardized testing/data-driven everything, prevalent fear of school violence, greater student needs/fewer resources, generally stagnant salary, fear of backlash from what I’m teaching (and thus censoring what/how I teach), the pandemic.

Reading Moby Dick I wonder why so many people, including me, were put off by it. Is it the sheer size? It’s quite an easy read so far and though there are many chapters, they’re all short. I wonder where the stigma came from…

@CovingtonEDU I definitely unlinked my LMS grade book from the Skyward grade portal, and told the kids that I did so, to try and keep the focus on learning not points. They got nervous at first then that the grades weren’t right and always there.
