It is indeed disconcerting to note that the latest roster of the @indSupremeCourt, dated 13.07.2026 and publicly available at https://t.co/DFfZo8xEAe, appears to have been conspicuously deviated from in assigning the appeal filed by Medha Roopam @dmgbnagar to a specific Bench. Cases under Preventive Detention (Category 2202) are ordinarily heard by the top four judges.

Since Justice Nagarathna had heard the cases relating to the Noida Workers’ Protest, one would have expected this appeal to come before her as well. The assignment of this appeal to Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, seemingly outside the normal roster arrangement, naturally raises questions, despite an enabling line , which is there in most of the rosters.

I had thought that the, malaise of handpicking officers for matters of personal interest to those who matter, was confined to the bureaucracy! One expects the Apex Court to be above these petty considerations, if there were indeed some, as a large number of people on Social Media feel.

In 2025, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya alleged that in Malegaon, government employees were complicit in issuing birth certificates to Bangladeshi and Rohingya nationals on the basis of forged documents. Following this, the Maharashtra government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and imposed a ban on the issuance of delayed birth/death certificates.
During the SIT and Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigations, the name of Ghazala Parveen, a clerk at the Malegaon Municipal Corporation, came up. She was arrested in March 2025. She is accused of playing a role in issuing birth certificates on the basis of fake documents. The ED has also treated this as a money-laundering case.
Ghazala Parveen has been lodged in Nashik Road Central Jail for the past 18 months. Her two young children—a son and a daughter—have appeared in videos, appealing to meet their mother and asking people to pray for her release. The family says the children miss their mother deeply.
In August 2025, the ED obtained court permission to interrogate Ghazala Parveen and four other accused persons in jail.

So far, no charge has been proven against Ghazala Parveen, yet she continues to be held in jail.
