My boss called me into his office and shut the door, which he never does, and said we have to talk about your parking garage badge records. I’d been scanning in on Saturdays. Six, seven Saturdays in a row. He said corporate flagged it and asked him if I was misusing building access, and he needed to hear it from me before HR got involved. My face went hot.

I’d been caught and I knew exactly how it looked, sneaking into an office building on weekends, and the truth sounded almost too strange to say out loud. There’s a janitor on our floor named Rosa who cleans nights during the week. Back in November I stayed late and found her in the break room with her teenage son, who was doing homework at the table while she worked, because she couldn’t afford anyone to watch him and didn’t want him home alone in their building.

He was studying for the SAT off his phone. His phone. So I started coming in Saturdays. I tutor him in the conference room. Math mostly. I bought him a used laptop off a coworker and told him it was an office giveaway. We do practice tests. He wants to be an engineer. My boss listened to all of this in silence and then turned his monitor around. He’d already pulled the lobby camera footage. He already knew. On the screen was me and the kid at the glass table, whiteboard covered in equations.

He said the meeting was because corporate wanted to give us a room permanently, and the company wants to pay for the real SAT course. The kid tests in March. His name goes on my wall before mine does.
