Strangest job I've ever priced. Woman rings up, asks if I build staircases. Course I do. Oak treads, a proper handrail, nicely finished, and budget's not a problem. I'm already spending the money in my head. Then she finally tells me exactly who this staircase is actually for...

Her cat. Nigel.

Eleven steps, floor to windowsill, oak, with a handrail because "he's getting on a bit".

I priced it like any other stair. She paid without blinking. Nigel walked up it once, looked me dead in the eye, then jumped straight on the windowsill like he'd done for twelve years.

Best money per square foot I've ever made.
