You are going to be punished for jumping the traffic signal. But what if you are rewarded for behaving like a responsible citizen? Yes, it is going to become a reality very soon in the next few months, Thanks to a new system developed by a city-based startup, which was showcased at the 108th Indian Science Congress Exhibition.

For those curious about how the rewards system works, the company makes use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. They have fitted these devices on traffic signals on the test site. Moreover, a tag will be given to the citizen who has been hooked up to the app. This tag will be placed on the vehicle.

Whenever this tagged vehicle would pass a device hooked up to the traffic signal, the RFID would take note that the driver has followed the traffic rules. If they did, then immediately 10 reward points would be credited to their account on the app named ‘Traffic Rewards’.

A pilot project is being implemented by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Nagpur Municipal Corporation on West High Court Road, which may be launched very soon. According to Nilesh Kolharkar of Social-Impact Innovations Pvt Ltd, the devices have already been installed on Signal and the company has also undergone extensive testing. The project is also funded by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

“Usually, traffic violators are punished, but we have seen that most of the citizens follow the rules. We have designed this system to recognize and appreciate such citizens. We are currently working on 10 traffic signals in West High Court between Laxmi Nagar to Seminary Hills, where the pilot project was launched,” they said.

The sensors can scan numerous vehicles and operate within a 20-meter range. If all traffic regulations are followed, the sensor will track the vehicles and award points to the accounts of the vehicle owners. One can enjoy shopping and use the points that have been credited with more than 800 brands by redeeming these points.
