@MabTheQueenMTG my group has been working on some homebrew "pre-cons" for that purpose, and I'm prioritizing thematic elements and optimizing for cards that are fun to draw.
A commander that lets you explain the themes of the deck without pulling out more cards helps.
@kilnfiendpotter Go for Microsoft Bob with as many dark confidant effects as possible?
I've been liking the space of commander with an optional constraint and a companion, but it gets to be as interesting as you'd want it.
@NileJoanRivers@PleasantKenobi I played around with it in Arena, and landing a few triggers makes the deck run worse, but if you have ways to draw too many cards, it turns that into *Value*.
recurring timetwisters to spit out moxen at least changes the board state
Reality Chip put in some work, too.
@Ashlizzlle_ the weirder ones:
Court of Embereth
Ill Gotten Inheritance
Court of Ambition
Quakebringer??
The Fallen???
Palace Siege
Subversion
Pestilence and pyrohemia could work, but 2-toughness commander is rough for those.
@Ashlizzlle_ Anything that hits all opponents, especially on upkeep or at will?
I like deep dive constraints, and haven't looked at lizards yet, but have some nonsense
Shivan Gorge
Cryptolith Fragment
Creeping Bloodsucker
Tithing Blade
Twilight Prophet
@LotusbloomMTG Not to defend scalping, but there was a limited quantity available for purchase in person at San Diego Comic-Con this year, so it's at least possible for people to have them in hand already
@ghirapurigears With @kilnfiendpotter 's new Klimt Kiss sleeves with LRR, I was looking at sultai commanders to officiate the Jace/Vraska wedding, and Felix is a contender.
This card is just such a joy.
Plus, the extra context I got from your podcasts even cooler! impossible card, now possible!
@vote_checkbox oh, neither of these is fun to play against necessarily, but one makes everyone pull out infinite -1/-1 counters to make their own board states shrink.
I can see how that feels different. also the "it hits everyone" means that even if somebody else is the villain you get hit too.
@astralsflame I'm doing horseshit in alchemy and don't want to subject anyone to two or three games of it in a row (or subject myself to the horror of enemy sideboards...)
