What a special experience to trek part of the new #TransBhutanTrail recently inaugurated by @PMBhutan. The 250-mile historic pilgrimage trail is a unique part of 🇧🇹's cultural heritage! So proud that the Trail’s restoration was led by @BhutanCanada together with @tourismbhutan
It's finally here! The day (and night) of The Travel Industry Awards by @ttgmedia has arrived!!! Congrats to all shortlisted, brilliant entrants. See you later #travelindustryawards 🎉💃
We are extremely excited and proud to be a part of the restoration and launch of the Trans Bhutan Trail. We would like to join in celebrating and thanking everyone involved for their hard work and belief in achieving this historic moment. Tashi Delek!
@tripalong@kerryawalker@Lorna_Explorer @amymcp_writer @tourismbhutan Hi Nicola! The full trail is 403km from Haa in the West to Trashigang in the East :) We operate a trip which is 36 days in total (includes rest days!)
Along the trail, local people had come out to support the inaugural walk by offering butter tea and apples from their farms. This lovely lot also had some incense on the go.
A troop of monks and a party of youth scouts came along too… The monks had been up since 5am, chanting and making smoke offerings to get the blessings of the spirits that the Bhutanese believe inhabit the forests, rocks and rivers along the #transbhutantrail. Amazing vibes.
The hike was led by the prime minister, Lotay Tshering, who is also a surgeon and as it turns out a very fit man. He beat us all to finish the 10km uphill hike to lunch first, and then put us all to shame by carrying on to Punakha. (That’s a looong way)
After the prince of Bhutan and prime minister arrived, there were prayers, speeches and we all lit butter candles. We then had butter tea and saffron-infused rice before heading out to prepare for a mammoth inaugural group hike (no pics allowed in the temple).
Unbelievable privilege to be here for the official opening of the #transbhutantrail today. The ceremony took place in the inner sanctum of Bhutan’s oldest original fortress. (That’s @amymcp_writer - hiker extraordinaire with me) @TrailBhutan@tourismbhutan
