It’s as if it was announced just in time for this year’s Traincomms Conference (it wasn’t), the differing standards of on-board WiFi across Europe have been measured by Ookla Speedtest®. And some countries have got more to crow about than others…

Reports comparing on-train WiFi services are like buses, you wait ages for one and then two come along at once. The latest data-set, comes from Uswitch broadband and is shows how travellers feel about the WiFi offered by UK train companies https://t.co/upZpdidt8a.

Don’t delay, only a handful of tickets left!
Discuss the changes in train comms, as investment in trackside networks is challenged by train operators trialling LEO satellite-delivered broadband to trains.

This is Project Reach which Network Rail has been working on for years (it published its original call for competition in April 2021) but here we have, again, the transport secretary jumping in at the last minute to claim the credit.

At Avanti West Coast, our window etching trial boosted mobile data throughput by up to 300% — using existing mobile networks.

That benefit still applies with Project Reach. A modest investment in train improvements could have huge national impact.
