Nolan actually rewrote this whole dynamic. In the film, Calypso used lotus flowers to numb Odysseus’s war trauma, and what ‘changes’ is that he finally faces that trauma himself, not that she suddenly starts caring. In Homer’s original though, none of that happens, she’s obsessed with him and keeps him for seven years despite his misery, and it takes an actual god’s intervention to free him.

The real myth is way darker, she’s in love with him, keeps him against his will for seven years, and it takes Zeus sending Hermes to make her let go.
