When Mayor-elect Mamdani takes office, he will control over 6,300 miles of streets throughout the five boroughs.
Reducing car dependence is one of the best ways to reduce costs for New Yorkers. Owning a car costs nearly $9,000 annually, while taking transit costs just $1,500.
Answer: More than 16,500 as of the end of August, per @TransAlt.
That's a 12 percent increase from all of 2025.
32 percent of these drivers are "out of state"

This morning, I was proud to stand with @NYC_DOT in Astoria to announce the expansion of the Red Light Camera Program to cover 600 intersections across our city.
These cameras are an essential tool to change how drivers behave and to prevent red light running and fatal crashes.
There are still more than 10,000 signalized intersections in our city where drivers can recklessly drive through red lights without any deterrence.
Leaders in Albany and New York City should expand this lifesaving program to thousands of intersections, not just a few hundred.
Red light cameras save lives. We applaud the Mamdani administration for installing them at 600 intersections — the limit of what state law allows.
In the 2027 session, the state legislature has an opportunity to reauthorize and expand this critical safety program.
We know how to make our streets safer, so we did it 600 times.
Red light cameras reduce red light running by 80% and T-bone crashes by 65%. Most importantly, they help New Yorkers get home safely.
That's why we installed new red light cameras at 600 intersections across the five boroughs to help stop dangerous driving before tragedy strikes, and make our streets safer for everyone who walks, rolls, drives, or takes the bus.

You know it, I know it, and everybody in Sunset Park knows it, too: Third Ave is a death trap.
Our neighbors have spent years begging for action. The human cost is too high to wait any longer. It's time to redesign Third Ave to make it truly safe for everyone who uses it.
"In Levine’s Oct. 19 missive, he and the other signatories urge DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn to quickly pursue 'district-wide implementation' of Sammy’s Law on eligible streets in each of the 17 community districts"

The easiest way to save lives on our streets: lowering the speed limit to 20 mph.
@NYCComptroller Levine, the City Council's Transportation Chair @CMShaunAbreu, three borough presidents — @bradhoylman, @BKBPReynoso, and @QnsBPRichards — and 17 community boards all agree.

Every New Yorker deserves to have a Citi Bike station in their neighborhood. We applaud the completion of this expansion, and we hope to see this critical mode of public transportation become more affordable, so that more New Yorkers can hop on a bike without breaking the bank!
why are we posting this?
to let you know that together with @lyft, we've completed a MAJOR EXPANSION adding 230+ new @CitiBikeNYC stations and 3,700+ new docks to 7 neighborhoods across the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens!!!!
Right here at the Bryant Park station, the @MTA is building the first elevator funded by congestion pricing.
Business is up, traffic is down.
Now we’re putting billions to work on transit upgrades that will improve the rides of millions.
This financial burden is getting even heavier as gas prices skyrocket.
We can lift this burden for New Yorkers and prevent them from getting priced out of our city by building new train lines like the IBX, and by building dense housing next to train stations.
Building new housing near public transit is one of the most effective ways to make New York more affordable in the years and decades to come.
If you have to own a car to get to work, you’re paying an average of $9,000 a year in vehicle expenses.
79% of New York voters support building apartments near train stations, a new poll finds. The results suggest broad support for transit-oriented housing as New York debates how to address high housing costs.

There's an easy piece of technology that can prevent cyclists and pedestrians from being run over and killed by truck drivers.
But few trucks operating on New York City's streets are required to have it — and many of those trucks get an exemption from the city itself...
the two cyclists who were killed by truck drivers in september might have survived if those vehicles had side guards.
one of the trucks got an exemption from the city to not install them — and that's true for many of the trucks that operate on our streets
East Village, your beloved Avenue B just got an upgrade 🎉
This redesign builds on the success of the existing, popular Avenue B Open Street with permanent upgrades to prioritize pedestrian and cyclist safety nearby Tompkins Square Park and several schools!
