"Extreme misogyny and extreme transphobia go hand in hand in Brazil and the same thing is happening in this country and we have to fight together with feminists." Jo Clifford. Jo and Renata are performing together in Edinburgh in October. #TransCon19
Thanks to all our speakers, audience, organisers and volunteers for their contributions to #TransCon19. Please do contact us if you want us to advertise an event or article or spread awareness of an issue, etc and we’ll be happy to do what we can. Stay tuned and keep in touch.
@JoCliffordPlays: I want to play tribute to Renata Carvalho’s courage and I’m doing everything I can do spread it in the UK. Jo is working on a book about trans writers right now and Renata will be back in Scotland in October performing in Jo’s aforementioned play #TransCon19
@JoCliffordPlays our struggle is connected with your struggle: it is important that we do not lose heart. Even our artistic work, which often seems futile, can have an amazing effect on another country, as I have discovered with my play. #TransCon19
@JoCliffordPlays says that Renata Carvalho has done a brilliant job of showing how violence against transpeople are hand-in-hand with misogynist attacks on women. The same thing is happening in the UK. We have to fight together, with feminists. #TransCon19
Audience member recounting hearing that Renata Carvalho kept performing @JoCliffordPlays’s work even after security closed down the lights. They thank Carvalho for keeping going. She says this was the 4th censorship and she had to wear a bulletproof vest #TransCon19

This campaign person tells the politicians: Talk about gender identity if you want to win an election. The degradation of the country is linked to LGBTIQ people. #TransCon19
Costa Rican audience member says Latin America is going the same way as Bolsonaro. Any ideas on what we can do? Carvalho says it’s the whole world going this way... it’s all about money, capitalism. Trump and Bolsonaro had the same person helping their campaign #TransCon19
Renata Carvalho: only trans bodies and fat bodies are those that are joked about in Brazil and no one says anything. Audience member from Costa Rica says in Central America, they look up to Brazilian trans people for how brave they are #TransCon19
The social construct of transvestis was done by the media. So it’s always the same story when you want to criminalise the body. You are dangerous, they say. When we are arrested, we are put in the same cell as sex offenders, says Renata Carvalho #TransCon19
If you want to help Brazilian trans people, be aware of the complicity of Europe in Brazil’s problems, says Renata Carvalho. European wealth is reliant on Brazil’s poverty. Universities can support trans Brazilians to go abroad with scholarships, etc, #TransCon19
@Adamkashmiry thanking Renata Carvalho for sharing, surviving and being here today. I think we can all agree with this appreciation. This keynote was powerful and important and we are so thankful to have a voice from Brazil #TransCon19
