#BEYONDBALI DIARIES – DAY 4️⃣ 🇮🇩

On Day 4 of our first ever #BeyondBali tour of Indonesia, we headed out of Bandung to Yogyakarta, Java’s cultural capital. We took the early morning Panaromic Train. And what a ride it was – a truly picturesque journey through lush green paddy fields, mountains and villages with excellent views all the way. Lunch was on board the train, and we reached Yogyakarta in the afternoon.

After check-in and a brief rest, we went exploring the soul of Yogyakarta. Our first stop was the city’s iconic Tugu Monument, which lies right on the sacred Celestial Axis connecting Mt Merapi to the Sultan's Palace. We then had an enjoyable walk down the bustling Malioboro Street, taking in architecture, culture and food. We ended the night, sampling the legendary charcoal coffee – Kopi Joss – at a roadside stall.

On Day 5, we will explore the Buddhist mandala of Borobudur.

Think Egyptian mummies were only for humans? This 🐊 museum is about to prove you wrong. Right next to the famous Temple of Kom Ombo lies one of Egypt’s most unusual museums – the Crocodile Museum. Step inside, and you’ll come face-to-face with dozens of massive mummified crocodiles, some over 15 feet long, all perfectly preserved for over 2,000 years.

Crocodiles were sacred offerings to Sobek, the Egyptian crocodile god of fertility, strength, and protection. Worshippers believed Sobek controlled the waters of the Nile – and keeping him pleased meant survival. #BEYONDBALI DIARIES – DAY 3️⃣ 🇮🇩

On Day 3 of our first ever #BeyondBali tour of Indonesia, we bid farewell to the capital city of Jakarta and drove to the cool, green hills of Bandung. We reached Bandung in time for a delicious Indian lunch.

After lunch, we took a quick dive into modern Indonesian history at the Gedung Sate Museum. We then checked into our hotel – the legendary Savoy Homann that hosted the heads of state and delegates of the historic Asia-Africa Conference in 1955.

After a brief rest, we trooped out for a guided walking tour of Bandung’s Art Deco architecture down Jalan Asia Afrika (the Conference Road) and the charming Braga Street.

We returned to the hotel in the late evening, with the rest of the night free for our guests to explore Bandung on their own

On Day 4, a panoramic train ride from Bandung to Yogyakarta, Java’s cultural capital, awaits our guests.

#BEYONDBALI DIARIES – DAY 2️⃣ 🇮🇩

On Day 2 of our first ever #BeyondBali tour of Indonesia, we went on a tour of Old Batavia, the former colonial capital of the country when it was under the Dutch. We stepped out of our hotel to the beautiful Kota Intan Bridge and took a short bus ride to Zero Point Jakarta by the Harbourmaster's Tower, where the modern city began.

At the Harbourmaster’s Tower, we had magical, panoramic views of the Sunda Kelapa harbour, and posed with the iconic wooden boats that still ply across Indonesia, carrying cargo. From there, we time-travelled at the National Museum, where from fossils of Stegodons and the earliest humans, to the vibrant cultural history of Indonesia, facets of Indonesia's rich, layered history were revealed.

After lunch at the iconic Café Batavia, we had another deep-dive at the Jakarta History Museum. This instance, we time travelled through the history of Indonesia’s capital. We ended the day wandering through Old Batavia on a guided tour that ended at our hotel.

In the evening, our guests went their different ways, depending on their interests.

On Day 3, we will head to Bandung in the highlands – the equivalent of Pune to Jakarta’s Mumbai.

The Ta Phrom temple in Siem Reap wasn’t just the setting for Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, but also gave the film much of its character. Built as a royal monastery in the 12th century, it was a Buddhist seat of learning. But once the Khmer empire collapsed in the 15th century, the jungle took over, and the temple was slowly reclaimed by the forest.

#DidYouKnow? Unlike most of Cambodia's temples, Ta Phrom has been deliberately left largely as it was found: no restoration, no reconstruction, no beautification. Enormous silk-cotton and strangler fig roots still grip its corridors and rooftops. It's this raw, half-swallowed atmosphere that drew the makers of Tomb Raider to it, and its tangled, cinematic ruins have been drawing visitors ever since.

A few kilometres away from Dambulla, one of Sri Lanka’s sacred Buddhist pilgrimage spots, lies a 2,600-year-old secret – the Ibbankatuwa Megalithic Tombs. Scattered here are dozens of stone cist tombs – slabs of rock stood on their edges to form small square chambers, some capped with a single flat stone lid, like a rough-hewn memorial – dating from 700-400 BCE. Ibbankatuwa is the best-preserved proto-historic burial site in Sri Lanka, and excavations have unearthed clay pots with ashes, beaded necklaces and iron tools left as grave goods beside the dead.

#DidYouKnow? Some of the beads are cut from gemstones found only in India, hinting at trade routes – or migrations – that reached this quiet patch of jungle long before Buddhism did.

#BEYONDBALI DIARIES - DAY 1️⃣ 🇮🇩

Our very first #BeyondBali tour of Indonesia got off to a great start on Friday morning. We took off from Mumbai around sunrise, and landed in Jakarta in the early evening. On arrival, Bintara, our local guide, welcomed our guests with Batik stoles. He also gave us a short introduction to the country, its people and its religions. We checked in to our hotel in Batavia, the old Dutch capital, and celebrated the birthdays of two of our guests, Mallika and Punam, with a special birthday cake for them. In the night, some of our guests ventured out to explore the city's nightlife, while others chose to rest in the hotel after a long flight.

On Day 2, we will begin our exploration of Jakarta in earnest.

Inside the Greek Orthodox Church of St George in the city of Madaba lies the Madaba Mosaic Map, a 6th-century CE masterpiece made from over two million tiny stone tesserae. Stretching across the church floor, it depicts Jerusalem, the Dead Sea, the Jordan River, Bethlehem and dozens of Biblical sites, making it the oldest surviving geographic map of the Holy Land. Archaeologists used this mosaic map to discover the long-lost Byzantine city of Tharais, and uncover many other churches, mosaics and ancient agricultural infrastructure hidden beneath the Jordanian desert.

Actually, the mosque has only twenty columns, but because it is situated at the edge of a pool, the building doubles in the still water, earning it the nickname "Mosque of Forty Columns." Every evening at dusk, at Phrom Sampov near Battambang in Cambodia, a black plume forms in the sky. A storm of bats, millions of them together, spiral out from a cave inside Phnom Sampov mountain, forming a continuous, swirling ribbon of black against the sunset. The limestone cave's cool, humid darkness makes it a perfect roost, safely tucked away from predators, while the surrounding rice fields and farmland offer an endless insect buffet each night. Together, they have given rise to one of the region's largest bat colonies. The exodus lasts up to half an hour before they scatter to hunt. Locals set up chairs and cold drinks at the base of the mountain, turning it into a nightly open-air show.

Nature and modern architectural vision meet at the Lunuganga Estate in Bentota in Sri Lanka. Overlooking the Dedduwa Lake, the 15 acre lush property was once a rubber and cinnamon plantation before becoming the magnum opus of Sri Lanka’s pioneering architect, Geoffrey Bawa. He was a young lawyer when he acquired the plantation and began transforming it into a garden. Realising he needed to study architecture to pursue his vision for the garden, he ended up becoming one of the most influential Asian architects of his generation.

#DidYouKnow? He bought the estate in 1948 and continued developing it for over 50 years until his death in 2003? Today, the main cottage functions as a boutique hotel on the lakeside.
