We'll be cheering on the @NZ_Football Ferns at the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023™ tonight. And there's another BIG way to support your team... by planting future forests for generations to come.

Z is for Kunzea ericoides (Kānuka). It's very similar in appearance to mānuka but distinctive in that the leaves are less prickly or 'kinder' (K for kānuka, K for kind!) Kānuka is hardy and tolerant. It's a great choice for nursing other native plants or attracting honey bees.

We might think that kids would prefer video games or toys to native tree gifts, but that's not always the case. Read about nine-year-old Quention on our blog: what he really wanted for his birthday was native trees. https://t.co/gA0vgLcZfj

Y is for Dysoxylum spectabile (Kohekohe) 🍃

Once again, it's a challenge to find a native tree beginning with Y - but Y occurs twice in 'Dysoxylum', the genus of Kohekohe.
Kohekohe is attractive and shade tolerant, with flowers and fruit that grow directly from the trunk.

"Success is not the work of an individual, but the work of many."
With planting season for native trees in full swing, we see this demonstrated every day. Check out a dispatch from the Ōakura Coast Nature Trail on our blog to see community in action: https://t.co/vw54OxeJhS

Kiri's right, gifts for those who have everything are often hard to find. One couple we spoke with had already set up their house, so chose a native tree registry over wedding gifts. Read about their choice to forego more 'stuff' for a sustainable future: https://t.co/DzFnbh3m6J

X is for...Well, a native tree that begins with X is a pretty tall order. But we thought Pseudopanax ferox, by virtue of having X in its name twice, could fit the bill. It's remarkably slow-growing, but if you're looking for a hardy, 6m-ish native specimen, it's worth the wait.

Native trees are one of the most beautiful—and meaningful—legacies we can think of. You can donate native trees in honour of somebody special, or leave a legacy for native tree planting 🌿

W is for Whau (Entelea arborescens) 🌼

Whau (roughly pronounced foe) might just be the biggest beach bunny of Aotearoa's native trees. It closely hugs the coast and you're likely to have seen it around many North Island beaches and at the top of the South.

Honoured to be part of He Rā Rākau Tītapu – King Charles III Coronation Plantings, with the announcement today by @chrishipkins of a donation to Trees That Count to mark the Coronation and plant more than 100,000 native trees in communities throughout Aotearoa. 🌳👑

V is for Vitex lucens: pūriri. Despite being quite a well-known native tree, these aren't widespread across Aotearoa. They're typically found north of around Ōpōtiki, with a rarer sprinkling in other regions. 🌺 #LoveNativeTrees #NativeTreeAtoZ

U is for....tūrepo, sort of! Let's be real: we couldn't find a native tree starting with U. If you know of one, please let us know! This small, lowland native tree is also known as the small-leaved milk tree. #LoveNativeTrees #NativeTreeAtoZ

T is for Tāwheowheo (Quintinia serrata). This coastal to montane tree is quite small but also packs a punch with its wavy purple-spotted leaves. It prefers semi-shade with fertile soil, and beware its sudden collapse in times of drought! #LoveNativeTrees #NativeTreeAtoZ

[🌳 Trees That Count 🌳 @TreesThatCount]

S is for silver pine/manoao (Manoao colensoi) 🌳 Manoao looks similar to kahikatea, another favourite native rākau. It's unusual in that it reproduces via underground suckers, which isn't that common for conifers. #LoveNativeTrees #NativeTreeAtoZ
