Where the case stands

CMPD says Brown was served with the murder warrant Aug 28 after hospital treatment and transferred to the county jail. A judge denied bond, and local outlets list a next court date in September. WCNC has since reported he was indicted for first-degree murder.

What happened

On Friday night, Aug 22, 2025, 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska was riding Charlotte’s LYNX Blue Line light rail when a man seated behind her stood up and stabbed her in the throat. She died on the train.

City transit released the surveillance video on Sep 5, which is why the clip exploded online. Police arrested 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr. and charged him with first-degree murder. Officials have said the attack appears random, and there’s no sign the two knew each other.

“In and out of prison” background

Court and station reports show a long record:

Prior convictions include robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony larceny, and breaking and entering. He served multiple years in North Carolina prison and was released in 2020, then showed up in additional cases afterward.
