Oba of Benin is trending because some Benin indigenes are now claiming Lagos, following a 2016 clip of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, which reignited an argument over the historical ownership of Lagos.
Oba Akiolu said the first Oba of Lagos was a descendant of the Oba of Benin and described the Lagos royal tradition as “partly Benin and partly Yoruba”.
This video caused a rift as many believe that Lagos was originally occupied by the Awori (a Yoruba clan).
However, Benins’ point back to when the Benin Kingdom established a military base in Lagos which has led to another battle for the name “Eko”
One side believes Eko is connected to a Benin word meaning war camp because of Benin’s military presence, while Lagosians believe that Eko was coined from “Ereko,” meaning farmland in Yoruba.
During his 2016 coronation, the current Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, described himself as a direct descendant of Oranmiyan, the son of Oduduwa. A statement now used by the Yorubas to argue supremacy since the Oba is also from Ife.
Which he is, based on multiple existing documents suggesting that the Oba of Benin got his crown from the Awni, Ife.
Also, historian documents say the Benin Kingdom expanded to Lagos around 15th century, but only made progress in the 16th century under Oba Orhogbua and occupied Lagos Island (Oko) as a military base.
Which they found not empty per se, as documentations confirm locals used it for farming and fishing settlements (Oko), Lagos state as a political unit did not exist then.
The Benin Kingdom greatly influenced Lagos royal system.
Historian record that, during the fight to take the mainland (Iddo) from the Awori, perhaps following a dispute, a great Benin commander, Aseru, was killed.
An Awori chief, helped return his body to Benin, and found favour in Oba Orhogbua, who then gave him the authority to rule Eko.
Oba Orhogbua sent him off with state sword, royal symbols, royal drum, and some Benin officials to assist him set up and rule Eko. This person was Ashipa, the first Oba of Lagos, he brought balance and merged Iddo & Eko, with the backing of Benin Kingdom.,
Which technically gave Benin Kingdom what you may call colonial power over Lagos as a whole for about 3 centuries.
Before Oba Dosunmo reluctantly signed the signed the 1861 Treaty of Cession with Britain, after they threatened advanced military bombardment, ready to destroy Lagos and rebuild it unless he signed.
By this time in 19th century, Lagos Kingdom had established fully, still connected to Benin but operated independently. (Not my words, you can research.)
But bits of this have been argued, some believe Ashipa wasn’t a Yoruba prince, but an Edo, grandson of Oba Orhogbua. So his parentage isn’t definite. But, if the current Lagos Oba, Rilwan Akiolu say Ashipa is a descendant of Oba Orhogbua, we should all go with that.
However, it is believed that the Lagos Oba dynasty is traced to Ashipa and by extension, Oba Orhogbua. According to Benin royal genealogy, Orhogbua was a descendant of Oranmiyan - Eweka I - .. Ozolua - Esigie - Orhogbua … Ewuare.
Oranmiyan was a prince of the Oduduwa royal lineage and served as a major warrior/defender of Ife, Akogun (military commander), not a palace servant like some claimed today.

Update: Portugese Whistle blower, who exposed City, Rui Puito has been removed from witness protection, fears possible assassination.
So, in 2017, Pinto hacked a Man City executive’s PC through phishing and downloaded millions of evidence that has been used to convict the club of 114 of 155 criminal charges..
On that Wednesday morning of January 2017, the exec got a link to a financial compliance email from “UEFA” and clicked. That was all it took.
The Premier League started investigation in 2018 and UEFA started theirs in 2019.
In 2020, in exchange for safety, Pinto entered a witness protection program after giving authorities all the evidence he had obtained.
Now, that Man City have been found guilty on 114/115 charges, somehow, Pinto’s witness protection in Portugal has been terminated, effective October 10, exposing him to threats and possibly an assassination as he claims.
Pinto has started a GoFundMe to raise €3M to disappear into the sunset.
He was also prosecuted for crimes connected to how he obtained confidential information, and handed a four year suspended sentence.

Man City have been found guilty of 114 of the 115 financial charges brought against them by the Premier League. If their appeal falls through, the Cityzens could be expelled from the EPL.
The saga goes back to 2018, when leaked financial documents published by German outlet Der Spiegel triggered a Premier League investigation into Manchester City’s finances.
The allegations covered the period from 2009 to 2018 and included accusations that City failed to provide accurate financial information.
After a four-year investigation, the Premier League formally charged City in February 2023, referring the club to an independent commission. The 114 guilty findings does not automatically mean Manchester City will be relegated.
The sanction is a separate part of the process. Under the Premier League’s disciplinary framework, an independent commission can impose a range of sanctions. Clubs also have a right to challenge commission decisions through the appeal process.
There were similar cases as regards financial mismanagement; Everton received a 10-point deduction in 2023 after an independent commission found a PSR breach and Nottingham Forest were initially deducted four points in 2024.
But neither were found guilty of 114 charges, so a heftier penalty is expected to be imposed if City is eventually going to be punished. Which may include: heavy fines, point deductions, stripping of titles, suspension or expulsion from the Premier League.
Rival supporters and the red side of Manchester are already demanding for their relegation and points deductions while some are asking that the titles won during the period could be stripped away.

Don Jazzy is trending because rumors say the banger boy who claimed Collins impregnated Ayra Starr’s mom, has been arrested.
Actually, no reliable source supports or confirmed the arrest, just cruise bloggers and gossip pages.
Infact, this is a classic banger boy playbook: cause controversy, get backlash, stage an arrest, disappear, then return with a banger post mocking your critics.
It happened with Femzy a couple of times and last month, with banger boy Dr. Danny of Owerri.
Interestingly, the cruise blogger Oluwafunmilayo who broke the news that has now gone viral has made an update, claiming it wasn’t Don Jazzy who arrested AJ the banger boy. Which further compromises the authenticity of the arrest story.
A major indicator that it’s likely an engagement farming tactics is, all the defamatory posts about Don Jazzy are still up, getting more engagements, not only that, other defamatory posts remain up on AJ’s page.
Since the rise of banger boys, only Opay, Adekunle Gold, Tony Elumelu and Lawrence Alabi have successfully completed arrests.
If the arrest is confirmed, this story will be updated. Follow @TrendingEx for dailies

DJ Dimple is trending because Nigerians are suggesting her as Phyna’s next boxing opponent, after she ‘easily’ strolled pass Nkechi Blessing with a 4th round KO.
The argument is, Nkechi didn’t put up a challenge. So, Phyna should face Dimple who is basically a gym rat and a boxing enthusiast.
Unfortunately, fans are set for another amateur bout, as the organizers prefered actress Etinosa Idemudia to be Phyna’s next opponent, specifics are still unknown.
Rachel Oluwabukola Martins pka. Dj Dimple Nipple has always gone viral with her boxing and fitness training videos.
In attestation to her perceived abilities, 5 months ago, former celebrity boxing champion, Elizabeth Joyce aka Portable, challenged Dimple to a fight, after an embarrassing loss at the fists of Carter Efe, the current champion.
Phyna’s fans are reluctant, Phyna too has removed herself from the conversation “you people want her to send me 6ft?” — Her view is apparently a consensus. The twerk boxer only defeats Dimple in a scripted match, perhaps a WWE bout.
Phyna rather fights Peller’s Jarvis.
