Hey everyone. 👋
I’m an incoming first year medical student documenting the journey in real time.
You’ll find thoughts on medicine, pre-med, studying, fitness, marathon training, and the occasional hot take. My goal is to share the wins, the mistakes, and everything I’m learning along the way.
I’ve been sharing my journey on TikTok (@debreesmed), and I wanted a place to have more conversations and share thoughts that don’t always fit into a short video.
If you’re a pre-med, med student, physician, or just curious about the process, welcome. Looking forward to connecting.
The biggest mistake I see premeds make is treating every opportunity like a checkbox.
A research project, a volunteer shift, or a clinical job won’t get you into medical school just because you did it.
The stories, growth, and perspective you gain from those experiences are what actually matter.
Go deep, not wide.
If you’re fortunate enough to have multiple medical school acceptances, don’t just chase the highest ranking.
I’d be thinking about:
• Cost
• Location
• Clinical exposure
• Curriculum
• Research opportunities
• Student culture
• Match outcomes
The “best” school isn’t always the best fit for you.
One piece of MCAT advice I wish more people heard:
Stop waiting until you’ve “finished content review” to start practice questions.
You’ll learn more from getting questions wrong, reviewing your mistakes, and identifying weak spots than rereading the same chapter for the third time.
The MCAT isn’t just about what you know. It’s about how you apply it.
I’ve started meeting one-on-one with premeds, and it’s been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.
Every conversation is different. Some people are planning their MCAT, others are working through applications or deciding whether to take a gap year. I don’t have all the answers, but I’m always happy to share what’s worked for me and help people think through their next steps.
If you’re a premed and think it would be helpful to chat, feel free to reach out. I’d love to connect.
Reminder that Detroit Lions HC Dan Campbell has the most absurd coffee order of all time.
Two venti coffees from Starbucks with two espresso shots in each is more than 1,100 mg of caffeine.
That's the equivalent of drinking 10 Red Bulls...every morning.
