Water hyacinth cover on Hartbeespoort Dam is now below 4%. Neochetina weevils and Megamelus scutellaris (hoppers) biocontrol agents are still active on the remaining plants on the dam. Hopper numbers are currently low due to the depleted food resources and cold winter.
My online course on R for ecology is now OPEN! 🌿 Struggling with R? This one's for you.

Hartbeespoort dam update
Water hyacinth surface cover on the dam in December 2021 was just under 30% or 546 hectares. This year, the cover is sitting at 7.8% or 141 hectares, a decrease of approximately 22%.
The CBC hosted our first Research Day on Friday the 25th of November, it was a great success! The CBC had 75 team members here in person and around 12 attend virtually. With 42 staff and students presentations, we all got to know a bit more about what we all do!
Researchers at the #CBC have been working towards identifying a suitable #BiologicalControl agent to keep #Irispseudacorus populations under control. We have identified a potential candidate, Aphthona nonstriata, a flea beetle associated with the plant in it's native range.
