Today’s Dance Post.
Hi, Everyone & welcome to another of my occasional dance posts; this one part of my series covering the eight officially-recognized classical dance traditions of India. And this post is focused upon the Mohiniyattam (Kerala) tradition. I have already covered:
Bharatanatyam: Tamil Nadu
Kathak: Uttar Pradesh
Kuchipudi: Andhra Pradesh
Odissi: Odisha
Sattriya: Assam
>>>As is often the case I was spoiled for options when it came to finding these clips on YouTube – you can check out more videos on YouTube if you’re particularly interested in this dance tradition.
>But, as usual, I focused on solo dance, shorter videos, & HD videos.
>I think it’s best to focus on the shorter videos, since that enables me to include more videos, but also to better highlight the variety across the dance genre concerned.
>>>There is some beautiful dancing & many lovely dance moves in this dance tradition & in these videos you’ll see exemplars of both performed by very accomplished dancers.
>>>I’ve also appended two short ballet clips to this post.
>>>So, let's start with a little commentary pertaining to this dance tradition: a little history & mention of its ‘kinesthetic’ niceties & choreographic features.
Mohiniyattam
>>>Mohiniyattam is an Indian classical dance form originating from the state of Kerala & gets its name from Mohini: the female enchantress & avatar of the Hindu deity Vishnu - she was noteworthy for her feminine charm & is often styled an 'enchantress'.
>>>Like all classical Indian dances, this tradition has its roots in the ‘Natya Shastra’ — the ancient Hindu Sanskrit text on performance arts.
>>>But I suppose one of its characteristic (even if not unique) aspects is that it generally follows the Lasya style of dance, which is delicate, feminine & sensual. In fact, Kerala, the region where this dance genre developed and is popular, has a long tradition of Lasya style dances.
>>>It is traditionally a solo dance performed by women & this dance tradition was somewhat ‘modernized’ & systematized in the 18th century.
>>>The ‘Nritya’ at its core is the expressive aspect of the dance that normally communicates a storyline with emotional & spiritual themes. And in general these dances articulate a legend or a spiritual message.
>>>There are four basic dance units in Mohiniyattam & they’re called ‘atavus’.
>>>The basic posture of Mohiniyattam is parted feet, knees bent outwards, an erect upper torso, & gentle 8-shape side to side swaying of body pronounced with the hip movements.
>>>This swaying body movement is sometimes described in terms of calming images of nature & like the swinging of the palm leaves or the gentle undulating of ocean waves. And you’ll see a lot of this rhythmic swaying of the body in these videos, so you know what it’s all about!
>>>So, this dance form is basically all about the silent expression of words or texts through hand and facial gestures along with body motion set to music. And generally the hand and facial gestures of the dance follow the classical text ‘Hastha Lakshanadeepika’, in which they are elaborately described.
>>>The footwork is light or soft, often sliding and synchronous with the musical beat and body movement.
Attempts at Suppression Historically
>>>Like other Indian classical dance traditions, during the Raj (British imperial rule) there were sustained attempts to suppress this dance tradition.
>>>This was driven largely by Christian missionary lobbying & from 1892 there was a sustained anti-dance movement aimed at the total suppression of Mohiniyattam.
>>>The ideological rationales for its suppression largely related to its links to Hindu scripture & traditions, along with allegations that prostitution was usually associated with dance more generally; while the dances themselves were interpreted (from the ‘Western’ standpoint) as lewd if not obscene or indecent. Which may seem ridiculous to us, but we are talking about Victorian English religion, morality & staidness here.
>>>In fact, even in the 1930s all such perceived forms of "lewd dance or theatre" were banned.
>>>But in 1940 the Mohiniyattam dance ban was partially repealed, allowing for "voluntary dances in temples," although in 1941 a new law stipulated that the dancers should never be paid.
>>>This led to protests, public riots, & demands by dancers that because performance art is a form of economic activity (a means of income) and not just of religious expression they should be able to be paid. In fact, some Mohiniyattam dancers believed they should be paid by the state, but they never were!
>>>And it should be noted that the concerted nationalist resistance to British rule in India in the 1940s was ‘political’ in a very broad & transcendent way – people were fighting not just for political independence, but also for or to reclaim their religious traditions, their performing arts, & a lot of other customs & traditions as well.
