There were 2 options:

1. Do what I did, get my girlfriend off safely, go to dinner.

2. Escalate with an unpredictable anti-social predator looking for a conflict, who may have a weapon, and either be prosecuted for murder (best option), or get me and my girlfriend stabbed to death (but it’s BASED).

I was able to make a decision that kept the two of us safe. I’m sorry your iq isn’t high enough to understand second order consequences.

These people are quite literally just provoking us to attack them, or even just to “say something” as an excuse to kill us. Austin Metcalf was murdered because he “said something” to a guy casing his tent. John Pettigrew was shot and killed because he “said something” to a guy talking loudly to someone on the phone. They just want an excuse to murder you. I’m not going to endanger a small woman traveling with me to “say something”.

Last night when my girlfriend and I were on the DC metro to go to dinner, there was a guy talking very loudly on his phone. She leaned in, and whispered to me about how she gets nervous when men start shouting loudly in public, and she briefly glanced at him after doing this.

The man’s response to this was to go into a tirade about “minding our business”. He shouted that he was going to “slice your pretty little girlfriend up with a box cutter” for the awful crime of glancing at him, as well as find my family and beat the shit out of them for good measure.

Neither of us said a word. We stared straight ahead and didn’t dignify the man with any sort of response. I periodically whispered in her ear that we were going to get through this. She was terrified that he was going to kill her. As we got off the train, he kept shouting.

None of this has anything to do with any mental health crisis. This scumbag simply wanted to assert control over “his” space. Each party knew damn well that that he had way less to lose than either of us in getting into a potentially deadly confrontation. This guy could intuit that us, decently dressed rule followers, wouldn’t be armed. Why would he care about such standards?

I want public transit to work. I really, really do. But the problem is, if getting on public transit means that some miscreant will scare the shit out of people I love and be potentially deadly, it’s worthless. Forget about zoning, environmental laws, union labor costs, the auto industry “brainwashing” people into thinking transit is bad. You need to get on any train car where this garbage happens and aggressively put this behavior down.

In hockey, groups are separated by birth year. January, February, and March birthdays are far likelier to make it to the NHL than the late birthdays, since those players get size/growth advantages at a young age, allowing them to play on higher level teams that get them more playing time and development.

If you’re working in a white collar field/academia, an easy way to see if you’re out of touch: when was the last time you’ve spoken to someone who didn’t have/was not pursuing a degree? If the other person is getting paid while they’re talking to you, this doesn’t count (barbers, uber drivers, etc).

The non-college side hears us a lot more than the other way around.
