Random 40-man player note #20: Justin Verlander

A story:
The year we took Verlander, I flew down to one of his starts at ODU to videotape (yes, VHS) one of his starts - we needed some video to show Mr. I.

It was not the best start to record. JV was 90-95 for five innings and some 5'8" kid took him 410' to straightaway center with an aluminum bat. This wasn't exactly compelling #2 pick material.

Then rain hit and it seemed like JV's day was done. We hung around and waited out the delay, hoping to see William & Mary's closer.

The rain delay ended an hour later and shockingly Verlander came back out to pitch. We settled back in and watched Verlander face the next batter.

First pitch: 96

Next pitch: 97

Next pitch: 98

This was still the era where the average ML fastball was 91. Our jaws dropped. Verlander went on to throw a completely dominant inning, snapping off some great curveballs to boot.

We all know now this would become trademark Verlander - at his best late in the game, reaching back for 99-100mph as his pitch count climbed to (and past) 100 pitches. Seeing it then was unfathomable.

The biggest downside of all this? After the rain delay, I hadn't set up the camera again, so I didn't record that dominant inning! Oops.
