I'm recovering this weekend after three ("mile a minute") days as the co-chair of the International Forum on Quality & Safety in Healthcare. Thousands of people from 63 countries shared & learnt together.
When organisational finances get tight, the inclination of leaders is sometimes to stop people attending events like this. Evidence shows that if we want change, we should be doing even more of this. Change comes from the outside - we need to invest in being curious & learning from others: "We cannot look in a new direction by looking harder in the same direction" (De Bono). Thank you to @bmj_latest, @TheIHI & my fellow co-chair @dramarshah for an outstanding few days of discovery which I am confident will have sparked improvement in the NHS & across the globe. #Quality2024 @QualityForum
Tomorrow is your opportunity to join @lifebloodau's microcredential #transfusion community. If you've registered for our new MCs, this is a great forum to get involved with and share knowledge with peers. Join us at 11.30 am (AEDT). https://t.co/AUm0nFqIrk
One of the most impactful new change models of 2023 comes from Bill Bannear of @ThinkPlace. We create value & make breakthroughs in our systems through the strength, number & quality of relationships. In complex change, we cannot design the model or predict the outcomes in advance. But if we build these relationships, we create the conditions for impactful new solutions to emerge & be implemented: https://t.co/CL8n05oUZY
A Dutch proverb: "Trust arrives on a tortoise & leaves on a horse".
How to build trust like a tortoise:
1) Consistency
2) Transparency
3) Active listening
4) Fulfil promises
5) Respect boundaries
How to stop trust from eroding in a horse situation:
1) Acknowledge mistakes
2) Apologise sincerely
3) Make amends
4) Avoid repeat offences

Big numbers for today's 'Scientific highlights of Blood 2023', and there's still time to register for the 'Transfusion practitioners' session tomorrow. https://t.co/yGIDIEmaai @ANZSBT
In health & care, we often focus on a narrow concept of improving "staff experience", when we could be building a much deeper & more profound basis of human connection at work: a sense of belonging. Belonging is when an employee, regardless of their background or role, knows that their voice matters, that their unique experiences enrich the team & that they're not just seen, but understood. Organisations that build a sense of belonging have higher levels of engagement, retention & performance: https://t.co/DNGs6moS0B By @hacking_hr
We're ready. Are you ready? Visit us at stand 109 at this year's #Blood 2023 Conference and you'll be the first to hear about our new 'Transfusion practitioner' microcredentials and 'Transfusion laboratory essentials' microlearnings. We've also got a few new surprises this year.
Being a good thinker is an important trait for leaders of change. It helps us understand our world, make better decisions and tackle complex problems. Being intellectually humble matters (without acknowledging the possibility that our current beliefs may be mistaken, we can’t learn anything new). AND good thinking is also about:
1) Being sufficiently motivated to figure out what’s true.
2) Focusing on the pertinent information and carefully seeking it out.
3) Being open-minded about information we may disagree with.
4) Confronting information or questions that are novel/different from what we generally engage with.
5) Being willing to put in the effort to figure it all out.

Having high quality connections with others increases our overall well-being & sense of belonging, bolsters our psychological safety & makes us & our teams more resilient. Connections are "micro-bits", moments of interaction that can be created in seconds that help shape strong working relationships. Four ways to build high quality connections:
1) "Respectful engagement": communicating respect in small moments
2) "Task-enabling": helping others succeed in what they're trying to do
3) "Trusting": small moves that signal trust
4) "Playing": creating small moments of playfulness or fun that fit with what we are doing in a momentary interaction

Our systems need to change, which means we have to prioritise innovation. Innovation will only happen if we create the conditions for it. @Digitaltonto sets out nine "rules" of innovation:
1) Innovation is a drawn out process, not a single event
2) Innovation is combination
3) First, ask the right questions
4) There's no optimal size for innovation
5) Seek partners beyond your own capabilities (open innovation)
6) Disruptive innovation needs new business models
7) Follow the 70:20:10 model
8) Use platforms to widen and deepen connections
9) Collaboration is the best way to compete
