UK IMMIGRATION RULE CHANGES TAKE EFFECT FROM AUGUST 3

🇬🇧 TRIVANE UK AFFAIRS UPDATE

The UK government has confirmed that most changes under Statement of Changes HC 259 will take effect from 3 August 2026, following its presentation to Parliament on 9 July 2026. The amendments cover work, study, family and asylum routes.

Among the changes, amendments to Part 13 mean certain convictions on or after 22 March 2026 resulting in a suspended sentence of 12 months or more may trigger deportation consideration, subject to legal exceptions. The rules also standardise suitability requirements across multiple immigration routes while retaining existing exceptions for some overstayers.

Applications submitted before 3 August 2026 will generally continue to be assessed under the previous Immigration Rules.

UK BUSINESSES RETURN TO GROWTH AS ECONOMY SHOWS SIGNS OF RECOVERY

UK businesses returned to growth in July for the first time in three months, with both the services and manufacturing sectors expanding as lower fuel costs and stronger consumer spending boosted business activity.

The latest S&P Global Composite PMI rose to 52.1 from 49.3 in June, its highest level since February. Economists, however, warn the recovery could prove short-lived as higher energy prices and continued hiring pressures weigh on businesses.

AIRTEL AFRICA TO LIST MOBILE MONEY BUSINESS IN LONDON IPO

🌍 TRIVANE AFRICA UPDATE

Airtel Africa has selected the London Stock Exchange (LSE) for the planned initial public offering (IPO) of its mobile money business, Airtel Money, in the second half of 2026.

The IPO is expected to value Airtel Money at about $10 billion and raise between $1.5 billion and $2 billion, making it one of the largest African fintech listings in recent years.

According to Airtel Africa’s latest annual results, Airtel Money serves 54.1 million customers across 14 African markets and processed about $196 billion in transactions during the year ended 31 March 2026.

Chief Executive Sunil Taldar said a London listing would provide access to a broad international investor base and help unlock the long-term value of one of Africa’s leading fintech platforms.

The planned IPO reflects the rapid growth of digital financial services across Africa. As mobile money becomes an essential part of everyday commerce, access to global capital could accelerate innovation, financial inclusion and expansion across the continent.

WORLD’S SAFEST COUNTRIES FOR MIGRANTS: 2026 RANKINGS

Iceland has been ranked the world’s most peaceful country for the 19th consecutive year in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), reflecting its very low crime levels, high social trust and the absence of a standing army.

The Global Peace Index 2026 ranks Iceland, New Zealand, Switzerland, Slovenia, Ireland, Austria, Portugal, Singapore, Finland and Japan as the world’s ten most peaceful countries. Separately, the Remitly Immigration Index 2026 identifies Singapore as the leading destination for migrant safety perception, citing its low crime, strong rule of law and effective public institutions.

In the 2026 Global Peace Index, Canada ranks 14th, Australia 20th, the United Kingdom 39th and the United States 134th.

Safety is an important consideration for migrants, but it is only one factor. Employment opportunities, immigration pathways, healthcare, education, affordability and long-term settlement prospects also shape where people choose to build their lives.

A Nigerian court has conducted an on-site inspection of a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Ogun State, linked to what authorities describe as the country's largest-ever drug bust.

The Federal Government has arraigned three suspects arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over the kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The suspects — **Abdulrazak Umar** (a.k.a. Abu Khalifa/Abu Khalid), **Yunusa Musa** (a.k.a. Yunusa bin Musa), and **Shamsu Adamu Sani** (a.k.a. Abu Itisar) — were formally charged in connection with the abduction, which drew national attention.

SOUTH AFRICA REFORM MOMENTUM TURNS NEGATIVE, REPORT FINDS

🇿🇦 TRIVANE AFRICA UPDATE

South Africa’s reform momentum turned negative for the first time since 2024 after the government missed more reform targets than it achieved during the latest quarter, according to Business Leadership South Africa’s (BLSA) quarterly tracker.

The report found that 13 indicators improved while 20 worsened out of 172 tracked, with persistent challenges in electricity supply, rail freight and port logistics continuing to weigh on economic growth. Despite the setback, the Reform Completion Index stood at 71.1 in the second quarter of 2026, remaining 26% above its March 2024 baseline.

UK CUTS BUSINESS RATES FOR PUBS, CLUBS AND LIVE MUSIC VENUES

The UK Government will introduce a 20% business rates discount for eligible pubs, clubs and live music venues in England from April 2027, as part of plans to support high streets and reduce operating costs.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed a 72-member Team Nigeria squad for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with athletes set to compete across all 10 sports on the programme.

Team Nigeria will participate in athletics, 3x3 basketball, boxing, judo, para athletics, para cycling, para powerlifting, swimming, weightlifting and wheelchair basketball. The Games will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August 2026 under a reduced 10-sport programme.

Nigeria will be aiming to build on its strong Commonwealth Games record, with medal expectations in athletics, weightlifting, boxing and para events.

IMF APPROVES US$832.8 MILLION FOR CÔTE D’IVOIRE

🇨🇮 TRIVANE CÔTE D’IVOIRE UPDATE

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has completed the sixth reviews of Côte d’Ivoire’s arrangements under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and Extended Credit Facility (ECF), as well as the fifth review under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), making approximately US$832.8 million immediately available.

The IMF said Côte d’Ivoire met all programme targets, reduced its fiscal deficit to the WAEMU ceiling of 3% in 2025, lowered its debt distress risk from moderate to low, and is projected to achieve 6.0% economic growth in 2026 despite an uncertain global outlook.

CANADA COST OF LIVING PRESSURES PERSIST

Canada’s annual inflation eased to 2.8% in June, but many households continue to face high living costs as grocery prices remain elevated and housing remains a major financial burden.

Average asking rent stood at C$2,033 a month in June, with significantly higher costs in major cities including Vancouver and Toronto. Food expenses are also rising, with the average annual grocery bill for a family estimated at about C$17,571.
