Sunda Energy CEO on New Zealand acquisition strategy - ICYMI
https://t.co/WJOHvHwjK5
Sunda Energy PLC (AIM:SNDA, FRA:GHA0) CEO Andy Butler talked with Proactive about the company's recent annual results, progress across its gas exploration portfolio, and the transformational acquisition of producing assets in New Zealand.
During the interview, Butler discussed how 2025 was a year of rebuilding and repositioning for Sunda Energy following the postponement of a key appraisal well in Timor-Leste. He explained how the company diversified its portfolio through new exploration opportunities in the Philippines and a significant acquisition in New Zealand.
A major focus of the discussion was Sunda Energy's deepwater gas exploration acreage in the Philippines. Butler highlighted the area's significant resource potential, noting that the portfolio contains a mid-case estimate of more than 10 trillion cubic feet of gas potential. He explained how the company's strategy is to apply technical expertise to further de-risk the assets before attracting a larger industry partner to fund future drilling activities.
The conversation also explored the proposed acquisition of producing oil and gas assets in New Zealand. Butler described the transaction as "transformational," saying: "It takes us from being effectively a pre revenue company with long term projects... this makes us a production company." He outlined how the acquisition would provide immediate production, revenue generation, development opportunities and gas storage potential.
Timor-Leste remains a key focus, with Sunda Energy continuing preparations for an appraisal well while working alongside regional operators and government stakeholders to advance the project.
The interview also covered government support for energy security initiatives in both the Philippines and New Zealand, expected timelines for completing the acquisition, and Sunda Energy's broader strategy for building shareholder value through a balanced portfolio of exploration, appraisal and production assets.

On May 28, 2026, H.E. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, and H.E. Ferdinand Romualdez MARCOS Jr., President of the Republic of the Philippines, met in Tokyo and shared their vision to enhance energy security and supply chain resilience amid the current geopolitical situation.
Building upon the leadersโ discussions, as well as the Philippinesโ national efforts to strengthen its national stockpiling system and promote ASEAN-wide joint stockpiling, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) and the Department of Energy of the Philippines (DOE) will advance relevant cooperation
under the framework of the
The Philippines is working on the establishment of a strategic petroleum reserve program, including the development of new stockpiling facilities.
Japan will support this initiative by conducting necessary feasibility studies, and providing capacity building in the development of a stockpiling system, in cooperation with the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia
(ERIA), the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Japanese trading companies and Japanese engineering companies with technical expertise in this field. Both sides will explore the possibility of Japanese government institutions and private companies participating in EPC and financing for relevant projects.
2. ๐๐๐๐๐-๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
Both sides take note of the Philippinesโ commitment to establish ASEANโwide joint stockpiling and will work toward the realization of this vision, beginning with the development of a roadmap by ERIA on financing and other relevant aspects, which will be announced at the ASEAN Summit and the AZEC Summit.
Japan intends to engage with oilโproducing countries, including those in the Middle East, in promoting these efforts, while supporting ASEANโs own institutions in strengthening regional energy security and resilience. Building upon a long-standing bilateral relationship, METI and the DOE seek further
collaborative action and tangible results, reflecting a shared vision for a secure, sustainable, and prosperous energy future for both nations and the Asian region.
